Has anyone done any thorough testing about the PS2 power requirements? I've searched the forums but haven't found anything significant. I know that the power cube outputs 8.5v....but it is extremely unlikely that the core processor and support devices run off of anything higher than 5v. There has to be either a 5v, 3.3v, or even a 1.8v regulator somewhere on the board. My guess would be that the audio amps and maybe the video amps need the 8.5v...which means that it would be a much lower current necessary at 8.5v.
If that were found, then it could be determined how much current the lower voltage line needs and then just how much current is necessary at 8.5v. Depending on what values were found, the battery requirements could be made a little less strict and people could use 7.4v batteries and a step-up regulator to feed the 8.5v line.
Has anyone done any testing like this?
