Ideas on getting it to loosen up? I don't want the cart to completely fall out, but it would be nice if it didn't take a pair of pliers to budge it. (exaggeration)

Yup, very hard to pull carts out. The thing you have to do in your case is get it mounted down really well so you don't tear any connections. And as for you question, try lubrication? There's KY, and there's smuckers...

Perhaps there's some dirt plugging it up? Try cleaning it. If not, maybe sandpaper? If not, maybe a new slot?

you could use a small screwdriver to bend back the connections, though you would have to be careful to not do it too much. Your idea is probably better to get an even loosening of slot, maybe wrap the cart connector in paper or thin card and insert it.

Is it the contacts that are gripping the board in the cart too tight? Or is the cart slot plastic/metal/whatever rubbing on the inside of the cart?

I'd try your idea. I'd recommend using something made out of plastic or wood, though. I'd just be concerned with metal rubbing against metal, even just for the short time you're trying it.
