HD/AV cable to HD-VGA/AV cable?

Post by Biased »

So I had my Elite stolen from me a month ago and I've been without playing any video games since then. It also leaves me strapped for cash since I've needed money the whole time and I planned on selling the Xbox, which means that I have no way of starting any first projects for the forums :( On a similar note, I use a Dell S2209W 1080p monitor with my computer, even though I bought it for the sole purpose of gaming with my 360 and now it's just overkill. Luckily though, my girlfriend never uses the console I got her for Christmas so she lent it back to me. It's Pre-HDMI so I can only use it on my regular TV.

Then I got to thinking about this article about making a breakout box with a VGA connection out of the HD/AV cable, but I'd want to forgo the box and just swap the Red, Green, and Blue cables and connect them to a male VGA connector. Since I don't know much about these things yet I've been wondering if it's possible to just splice those three wires with the connector or if I'd have to splice and ground EVERYTHING out. Sorry about my lack of knowledge with this but I thought it would be cool to be able to hook a 360 back up to my monitor without buying the proprietary VGA cable or destroying the whole thing to make a breakout box. If I can't do this cheaply I'm just going to sell my monitor and use an old one.

Any ideas? Help is greatly appreciated.

It should be possible, but you might have to do some weird switching.

Just buy an Xbox VGA cable. You can find them cheaper on eBay if that's too much for you.

Buy this: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3666" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Good site, ordered many times. Free shipping, too!

You cannot just splice the cables, unfortunately. That is component, which while somewhat similiar to RGB in some respects, is not a simple crossover job. :( You will need a converter box like the one I use for my wii if you want to go that route, they are about $40.

I suggest just getting the VGA cable, though. ;)

I can vouch for this cable, I have one, works quite well and the build quality is pretty good.

It always seems that the answer comes to me by itself RIGHT after I ask the question. I found a ton of VGA cables for the 360 on ebay for less than five bucks shipped so I think that's cheap enough :P Thanks for the answers dudes.

Wrong. You can splice the cables, but you also have to run wires for Hsync and Vsync. You also have to short a few pins to switch the 360 into VGA mode. I think. I could be totally wrong though.

He did say "just splice the cables." Maybe that means I'd have to splice more than those three. I can imagine how wonky the whole thing would look after I got done with it and did all of what you suggest is possible though. I know my friend has an extra third-party component HD cable at his house, if I'm brave enough I'll rip it all apart and do work with it all someday.
