Finally Upgrading

Yeah you heard me right. I'm finally upgrading from my PIII 600mHz.
I am building it with my dad. I was gonna go witha biegh case but my dad wants a window leds ect

Well I have a HDD 160gb with fedora on it

I am getting a 128mb vga ard nVidia looks good for $45
a case at a computer show
a $50 dvd burner (wont tell you where)
all I need is the mobo and the cpu
what kind should I get. I want to be able to play all the new games HL2 CS and the new unreal games and I dont wanna have to upgrade for a long time. any suggestions?

Go with an Intel motherboard, P4 3 gig with Hyperthreading.

I built a p2 400 machine practically from scratch. It was just a case with a power supply and motherboard when I got it. I added a 32 MB nVidia TNT2 graphics card, soundblaster 16 card, 40 gig drive (1/2 full of mp3s), a floppy and a zip drive, and a Netgear gigabit ethernet card.

i also donbt know what kind.
I was thinking AMD cause my dad works with the guys every day and I even know some guys (had dinner with them ect) from AMD
Intel offers more speed though
Amd has 64 bit

The AMD 64bit are expencive as hell, and I'm not talking about the motherboards their fine, the CPUs are at least $220 I've seen. Nice idea but when money is a consern its hard to justify it.

then what do I get a Anthalon XP? if so what speed is 2.4 ghz enough so I wont have to upgrade anytime soon?

I'll tell you right now I've had my computer for nearly 3 years and its a P4 2.26 GH, I dont think I'll have to upgrade for another 2 years. Thats at the very soonest, 64bit is still not prime time.

2.4GHz isn't bad. About 2 weeks ago, I got a brand new laptop, straight off the shelf at BestBuy. 3GHz. It's good enough.

Thats nothing I have a G3 350mH, 128mb, 6GB, Zip 100, and a CD-rom. All that and OS X 10.2. Thats pry older then your's.

Last year I finally dumped my old OLD computer. I don't remember what it's mobo was, but it was like 64MB RAM, running Windows 3.1, and I had like a 28k external modem.

Dude, I've got a Mac SE/30 running in my bedroom.
SPECS:

RAM- 8 MB (that's maxed out without software cavets)
HD- 80 MB (Still the origional)
SCREEN- 1 bit 9" (B+W)

And an old Zenith SuperSport laptop.
SPECS:

RAM- 256k
HD: 16MB
SCREEN: 4 shades of blue CGA
NETWORKING: yeah, that's a good one!

Modded with a pot for the speaker.

I mostly use it for Infocom adventures (Zork, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Leather Goddes of Phobos...)

So HA!

Neither of the pics are my exact machines, but they're the same models.

I'd stay away from any 128MB nVidia card for $45. It'd probably be an MX440 or a FX5200, both of which are appalingly slow. Spend about $20-$30 more and get a GeForce4 Ti4200 or Radeon 9600 Pro if you plan on doing much gaming. FX5200 is slower than the GeForce4 MX and Radeon 9000 in many tests. Be warned!
BTW: a $50 DVD burner is available like, everywhere. You can get 16x dual-layer burners for that much now. I recommend the NEC ND-3520A (about $50-$60 depending on whether Newegg has it on sale or not). Very classy drive, and you can get it in beige, black or silver.
