As we know, you can use 4 or 6 connection joysticks in third party N64 controllers or other controllers for other systems; the GameCube joysticks are a little smaller than ones in a PlayStation controller.
I tried a joystick from a PSP slim today, worked fine on a third party N64 controller (SuperPad); however the character moved from a quick walk to a very slow step when the joystick was released, indicating the joystick doesn't always center totally; also, it seems to register a direction but not adjust the speed of the character depending on how far the stick is moved across.
For these two reasons, I don't see the PSP joystick as being good enough.
What joysticks can we use that are very slim and have quite a small top? I know you can trim down the joystick stick on a regular stick and make the top a bit smaller, but that also means it takes a bit more leverage to move the joystick than it was designed to. I know you can also make a custom flat joystick top, which would work fine (and I might end up doing at this rate), but the question is this - is there a good quality analogue joystick that is slim, fairly small, small top, good to use, proper return-to-center ability; and also varies the amount of movement of a character based on how far the stick is moved?
Best third party joysticks?

I have so wanted to try one of these: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSea ... 03A45NB-ND
By the way, the Joysticks used in most all PS1/PS2 controllers use 10k Ohm pots.
Same for Gamecube analog sticks.
We know these work fine in most any N64 controller as well, so I'd consider it a baseline.
I'm not really sure about what you'd pull from a PSP Joystick...
But anyway, just about any 10k+ Ohm analog stick should work fine for this.
Personally, I'd like to find some small potentiometers with spring-returns, and just craft my own itty-bitty joystick

There was some someone mentioned a while back, for the Tapwave Zodiac I think. But IIRC they were really expensive.
May I ask what the mini-joystick is for?

All future portables I make that need joysticks.XCVG wrote:May I ask what the mini-joystick is for?
marshallh has come up with a suggestion in my N64 thread about the PSP joysticks, if that works, problem solved!
Re: Best third party joysticks?
Those would be great, but they're 10K. Standard joysticks are 5K.jleemero wrote:I have so wanted to try one of these: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSea ... 03A45NB-ND
EDIT: Nevermind, you're right. Standard pots are 10k.
