Use my computer to mod 360 controller output.

Post by doninss »

Specifically, would one be able to send (wired) controller inputs to a pc and modify the output (say to a southpaw config) and send the data on to the 360 via usb? With acceptable lag? Any hardware needed (besides a wired controller)? (Special cable?)

I would really like to be able to always be able to config my controller when playing on my 360. I'm an old dog and new tricks (unfamiliar control schemes) come harder every year.

I tried this once but couldn't find any way to program a feature that would output data from a usb port.

Could you elaborate more on this "southpaw" configuration? Would that be just swapping the joysticks? If so, It probably would be much easier to just wire the left joystick to the right board and vice versa.

From what I understand from when I tried to do this is that the PID (product ID) needs to be that of an xbox 360 controller then the xbox 360 will recognize it. you could...

A. somehow emulate this on your computer as well as connect the two usb ports together without frying them which seems rather "If-y"

B. build a device with a pic micronctroller that interfaces with the computer and regulates power. This would also contain the VID and PID

plan B was what I wanted to try a while back but never quite figured it out. After all I know minimal C++ programming none of what I know relates to USB input / output and I know no pic programming at all, but I do have a PIC programmer just because I'd like to learn a little about it.

So do you know any programming languages or are you just wondering if its possible? You're not going to learn how to program something like this overnight that is if you don't know any programming.

Thanks for the replies all.

I was actually looking for some initial viability feedback (got that, again thanks), and fishing for some possible expertise/ experience (got that too at least partially, again thanks).

Southpaw was just an example. I'd like to be able to fully reconfig the controller output. (Ideally modify even analog stick response.) I believe many 360 owners would also love to be able to fully reconfig their controllers. I use my monitor (vga cable, and an AB switch) with my 360, so my computer is close.

I haven't programmed for many years (and was never more than rank hobbyist). I also have little knowledge of USB. I almost certainly won't be doing this myself. :(

You might want to look in to this. Interfacing a PIC with usb.

I plan on ordering one of these and checking it out. Might be a week before I even order it though. I'd like to see the pinouts first.
