Brightening the PSone screen but keeping it adjustable.
I know you can bypass the capacitor on the PSone screen board to increase the screen brightness, like when doing an LED mod, although I believe the brightness is wicked up a fair bit, and can't be adjusted. Sure, you can put on a switch if you want to by-pass it if you want to, but that isn't the solution I am after.
I want to be able to increase the brightness of the screen, by preferably increasing its brightness a bit on the lowest contrast setting when pressing the buttons on the screen control; and also thereby increase the brightness at the maximum level - in other words, say 10%-20% more overall.
Can this be done?
Reason? Well, my TurboGrafx looks gorgeous in its RGB mode, at max contrast setting the brightness is fine, but would be nice to make it brighter.
Alternatively, the other thing, is is there a way to increase the light level overall, but say adding luma to a C-sync line - no idea if this would work, just thinking of a way to get more brightness in as an option.
Thoughts?

Life of Brian mentioned taking off the anti-glare layer of the screen for maximum brightness... although I don't know how much brighter it will be, perhaps that's your best solution.

Hmm... So you want the actual picture of the screen to be brighter and adjustable? Not the backlight. Till someone finds a way of getting up the hidden OSD menu of the screen in don't think this will be posible.
As most of the psone screens video circuit is controlled digitally. I'm not sure if the brightness mod would work in RGB mode as no luminance signal is present as is when the screen is in composite mode. (The luminance is carried in each of the RGB signals).
To get more overall bightness you could take RGB signals directly from the CXA1145 chip insted of the Hu6260 chip. The CXA1145 has pre-amplified outputs that are quite high. I took RGB signals directly from this chip in my master system portable. The image on my psone screen is crisp and bright. Though after a wile i thought the image was abit too bright, so i put 75ohm resistors in series on each of the RGB signals to bring levels down to what the PSone RGB levels would be. Hope this helps

I took the RGB off the CXA chip, far better than off the HU6260 chip (still too weak). I had to work this out myself. The CXA chip is only present on the PAL version of the TurboGrafx - pleased I got that model now; only downside to the PAL board is that the crystal is 17.73Mhz against 21Mhz for the American and Japanese consoles - small price to pay though!
Yes, forgot, luma doesn't work on RGB.
Fortunately the brightness on the PSone screen is just ok, on maximum.

Cool, i usually put the psone screens brightness up to about 80% and leave it at that. Its a bit too bright for me at 100%

Indeed, however some systems need more brightness than others. For example, as I recall, SNES and N64 at about 80%, GBA at about 60%, TurboGrafx at 100%
Might remove the polarizer layer on my PSone screen.

100% in the dark is too bright for me, it makes my eyes trip out, and then they start to hurt after about 20 minutes. That's on the psone. On n64, I like to keep it at about 30%.

Why not add a potentiometer to vary your LED mod? TRUE adjustable brightness!

Yeah, just get a digital potentiometer.XCVG wrote:Why not add a potentiometer to vary your LED mod? TRUE adjustable brightness!

Not doing an LED mod; might remove the polarizer layer though from the screen. The extra brightness from that, and extra clarity, should make the difference hopefully.

Removing the polarizer layer will render the screen useless, I'm sure you mean the antiglare layer, though. Antiglare is right above the polarizer, very thin, the polarizer is slightly green tinted, while the antiglare is cloudy clear(wtf?).bacteria wrote:might remove the polarizer layer though from the screen.

Removing the polarizer will make the screen VERY bright!
