iPod lineout adapter.

Post by palmertech »

People charge $40 on ebay for these. That is too much. I tore apart an old iPod USB cable I had, and made this:

Here is a pic of it hooked up to an iPod mini:

Hooked up to my stereo system, it sounds WAY nicer than the headphone out jack. Looking forward to a new portable amp so I can use my headphones with it. :)

Also: Soldering to tiny 32 pin connectors is not fun. Think like an N64 cart slot, but as wide as an obese persons thumb.

What volume level would you estimate that the line-out puts out? I use the headphone-out on my iPod to run through my car stereo, but I need to leave the iPod volume pretty much maxed out to get any decent level out of it.

On true lineout (Like this) you cannot change the volume, as it is just a bare signal. The volume on it when I drive headphones is about 80% or so of what I can get off the headphone jack.

I knew you couldn't adjust the volume when using the line-out, that's why I asked. Thanks. I may give this a shot.

Nope, it just gives you a LINE OUT jack.

I could have added charging easily, but I was looking into the ipods lineout turns out that charging at the same time gives a slight hum to the music (Like the DS, but not as bad).

I rarely listen to music in more than a few hour sittings, anyways, so I should be fine.

Well, if you were desperate to listen to it while it charged, couldn't you just use the headphone jack for that rare occasion?

Nice work, though. My sister would be all over that.

She actually owns an iPod and listens to it in the car and on her home system a lot. She was just griping about the prices of these.

Oh, okay. These things go on eBay for $40+shipping! Granted, they are using silver wires and fancy connectors, but come on; The sound is coming through a minuscule, common copper trace on a PCB anyways. It might matter for long distances, for for 1-3", it will not matter.

Maybe I should make a run of these and see what I can pull for them...

Sorry to pee in your Cheerios, but I just found them at DealExtreme for $5. On the bright side, think of all the work I just saved you.

I thought I saw some charging ones also, but I can't find them right now.

EDIT: Received and confirmed that these work as LINE OUT just like they're supposed to. :D

Nope. Those are just headphone out, not lineout, so I am still safe.

Basement modder, I would also like to see yours. I thought that standard video cables tapped lineout, anyways?
