Pocket PCs

I'm looking to get a pocket PC. I'm not sure what's good, what's considered old and clunky now, and I'm not sure what to look for.

Basically, I'm looking for a small, pocketable device that has wifi and can run things like msn, firefox, and other light internet browsing stuff. That's it. That's its purpose. Internet access on-the-go.

Recommendations? It should have good battery life. (5+ hours)

well, as much as i hate too say it, an ipod touch is probably your best bet.

I would love to say you are completely wrong. Nokia n800 destroys the touch in most ways excluding aesthetics and multi touch. But it adds thing into the mix like a webcam, mic, being able to run multiple applications, open source, cheaper.

true, but the battery life falls below his required 5 hours, so it doesnt fit what he wants, exactly. and just for the record, i am buying an n810 this weekend.

You're not going to run Firefox on a PDA. The PDA edition, Minimo, is very large and slow. You're stuck with Pocket IE and Opera Mobile. (Opera mobile kicks ass, by the way.)

Dell's Axim x51v has WiFi, Bluetooth, VGA output, and best of all 3D acceleration. The only downside is it's getting kind of old (it only runs Windows Mobile 5 or 6). A handheld PC would be perfect for you, if only a company would make one that doesn't suck... (*cough*)

A jailbroken iPod Touch or a Nokia N810 would probably do what you want. If you get the N810, you can throw a couple SDHC cards into it. (Apparently it can even run Android, if you really want it to.)

I looked in to the iPod touch briefly. There's a few things that I don't like:

1) It can't run the windows live messenger program. I don't even use the damned thing, but the ability to text people's mobile's would help quite a bit as a replacement to a costly phone plan just for the occasional text. Since the MSN protocol is messed, Trillian/Pidgin/ebuddy/etc. can not send to mobiles.

2) It's an ipod. I don't want to pay the extra money for the ipod name. I'll admit, it's a nice piece of hardware, but when it comes down to it you're still paying an extra 50% for the ipod name.

3) It's an ipod. Those things are for preps.

A jailbroken iPod Touch or a Nokia N810 would probably do what you want. If you get the N810, you can throw a couple SDHC cards into it. (Apparently it can even run Android, if you really want it to.)

you can probably put windows mobile on an n810.

*imitates buzzer* Wrong. No XP for the N810. XP doesn't run on ARM processors. Well, you could run it in a virtual computer on top of a native OS, but it would be very, VERY slow.

I use msn on my nokia all the time, you just get pidgin for it and you are set for everything

Yup. I use trillian.

But still, nothing but official software has support for users with msn on their phones.

Fring for ipod touch supports MSN, I think.

And I am the one selling my N810 to Sam. If our deal falls through, let me know if you are interested, Kurt.
