Post by thewise1 »

Oi, apparently kfc is really strict on 15 years olds. Even though my dad knows the assistant manager, and I thought I went through the interview perfectly. She still said to call back a few weeks before I turn 16. Which means that there is an extremely small chance that I got the job. I've already applied everywhere in town. I guess I'll just have to wait until I'm 16 to re-apply for jobs.

First job interview advice, as you asked:

For a business environment:

1) Be smart and polite.
2) Turn up 3 minutes before your appointment.
3) Be nice to receptionist/greeter - they will probably feed back about you.
4) Research about company, what it does, why it is the success it is, etc.

or for KFC:

1) Wash you hands.
2) Turn up on time, regularly. Be polite.

In the meantime, you could try to make your own money, as odd-job man to local companies and homes - money is money after all.

Don't bother till you are 16, these franchises all do it.

Don't hold it against the manager, it is because they have an insurance policy that only covers workers over 16. If you accidentally made a doubly crispy honey glazed arm, out of YOUR arm, they would not be protected from a lawsuit. If you accidentally walked through a wall, their insurance would not pay for the damage.

So like Bacteria said, try to work on under-the-table cash paying jobs. You can make a lot by charging $10 for something people hate doing, and then getting it done in an hour or so. It sounds boring, but it will add up.

Here is Southern California, dressing in a suit for a job interview is often a death sentence.

Also, I'm sure it's a bit different in other states (though not much different), but I know that Minnesota has some pretty strict child labor laws under 16 that restrict how much and when you can work.

Yeah they do, I can only work 2 hours at night, and 4 hours during the day if I got the job.

Be polite and honest. Smile. Show up 10 minutes early. And wear something decent. :D

Around here, at any job that does not require the completion of high school, a job interview is their way of saying "You got the job if you're not totally sketch."

At KFC, they're hiring because somebody quit, and they need you. Chill, you're at par with everyone else applying, it's a sort of "first-come, first-served" deal.
Hey, sup?

I got my first job 3 years ago, when I was 14, at Dutch Wonderland. I worked 6-8 hour days for 4-6 days a week at $6.00 an hour. I didn't do anything special I just walked in to the interview, with my average clothing on, and walked out with a summer job  So much for labor laws.

Now I'm 17 and it has been impossible for me and my friends to find any jobs around here recently. Looks like I'm not working this summer.

I managed to get in at Target about a year and a half ago right after my 16th birthday and I've been there ever since. "Do your best to make a good impression and hope you get lucky" is all I've got to offer.

That (with the changed info). Also, call to follow up on your interview/application a few days later. That's what really got me my job. They knew that I was truly interested (and I didn't realize how lucky I was until later; we get around 100 applicants every spring and hire 1-2).

Your lucky you can even apply for a job at 15.
Where I am at there are so many teenagers that there are no openings.

I don't even bother looking for a job.
I just sell stuff, which gets close to nothing,
Cut grass, $100 a month,
and play at gigs with my band, which gets about $5 a gig.

Oh and for the interview thing:
If you ever have another interview, NEVER insult the company you worked/interviewed with.
