Good Deal on PC?

AMD Athon XP 2600+ barton core.
1gb ddr2 ram (not sure exact type, could check if it really makes or breaks the deal, lol)
radeon 9600XT (best 9600, about compares with a 9800 besides pipelines i believe)
80GB HDD
Some Asus Nforce 2 motherboard.
(took straight from craigslist ad)

and how would it compare to the PC that i currently use? (for gaming)

Pentium 4 3GHZ
1.25 gb ddr ram pc2700
geforce fx 5600
dell dimension 4600 mobo

and how well would the Athlon overclock (if needed)?

Not a bad deal, but I don't think it would be faster than your current setup. If you're gonna upgrade, you might as well upgrade.
I would compare it to having a semi-crappy car, and then buying another semi-crappy car. Then you just have 2 semi-crappy cars, instead of something decent.

well, im upgrading to i7 this summer, but the computer im currently using is my Dad's and he is starting to get angry with all my games on his work computer, so i need something to hold me off until the end of summer.

Well if you can afford it, its only 80$ and you have your own computer, to yourself to have whatever you want on it.

Really it's only better because it would be your own PC. If you have the money, get it. You might be able to unload it for $50 or so at the end of the summer, or give it to a relative or something. (It's not exactly a high-end PC, but it's more than enough for most peoples' computer needs.) I wouldn't put any money into performance upgrades for it, since it's probably AGP (nobody uses that old crap anymore), and the i7s don't use DDR2.

The only upgrade I'd recommend is to install an additional hard drive (if it has SATA ports) and keep all your stuff on it. That way, it will still be good for your future rig, and you can bring all your files with you.

If it's cheap, buy it. You can never have too many PCs.

It does not actually have ddr2 ram. DDR2 was not used until the late Athlon 64 era. It uses AGP and probably does not have SATA. Not a great PC, but decent for older games (supports OpenGL and DX9 SM2). My dad has a similar computer, but VIA chipset and All-In-Wonder 9800.

It's probably a little but not a lot faster than your current box. In fact your current rig may be faster. In that case swap the videocard (Radeon 9600> Geforce 5600) and possibly steal some ram. You can proceed to use it for something else. In any case for $80 it's a steal.

In case anyone is curious, the rig I'm running is a Core 2 Quad 8200, Gigabyte P43 Mobo, 2GB HyperX RAM (the vendor screwed up, it was supposed to be regular Kingston stuff), Radeon HD 4670 videocard, and 320GB Seagate HDD. A very midrange box, not overly fast but not a slouch either. ASUS case and Cooler Master power supply, very nice looking. Maybe $650 (CAD) all told.

I think it might actually have atleast SATA, because my Dell Dimension 4600 Mobo (2003) even has 2 SATA ports, and this would be an aftermarket enthusiast board, so I would assume it would have some.

I wouldn't necessarily assume so. I've got a similar spec multi-processorl Athlon MP board from around the same time and it doesn't have SATA.

Too bad I already sold my old computer to a friend. It blew that computer you are buying (and have) out of the water and I sold it for only $60.

I would just use that compy for parts.

No, its the most powerful computer he's ever had so obviously he will start staying up late playing CS:S and BF2 all night. You can buy my new computer for $1000

There's a piece of crap computer in my closet, but my dad probably won't let my sell it. It's my old computer kludged into working with random parts.

ASRock 775DUAL-VSTA (AGP and PCI-e, doesn't work well with either)
1GB Kingston DDR2 RAM (667MHz, but only stable at 400MHz, probably the timings)
GeForce MX400 Videocard (random crap in the closet, because I like my super awesome HD 4670, my dad is using the AIW 9800, and the FX5200 is... somewhere)
Foxconn case (with crappy screwless (yeah right) system)
Generic 300W PSU (230W continous, lol)
Western Digital 80GB hard drive (IDE of course, but the mobo supports SATA)
LG CD burner (again random closet crap)

Home Web/File Server? That's something useful it could do, and you could still keep it in the closet.

The problem is that it only has an 80GB HDD, we don't have any big hard drives around, and there's a USB HDD about 2 feet from my computer. If it had a better videocard I'd make it an HTPC.
