If you want chat, use AIM.

Re: Modding Portal?
AIM would work, but there will always be people who simply won't get it. Plus it's not as fun as a dedicated forum chat!
That said, I honestly don't care too much either way; I've yet to fill up my PM inbox or really even talk to more than two or three people outside the main forums, but I can see how a chat would come in handy at times.

Re: Modding Portal?
As mentioned LOB, "chat" isn't something I am interested in in its normal sense; I have never done AIM or similar and never entered a chatroom - I have no interest; but it could be used differently to the usual pointless drivel in chat by using it for fast answers to problems which can be resolved easily, rather than just posting a topic in a thread and gambling that someone who knows the answer reads the thread in the right forum section. Then it isn't "chat" but like "live technical support". Someone could post something like "anyone here know about ....?"; or "I posted a problem in X forum recently about X, and is still an issue - if anyone can help please visit that thread". You get the idea.
I know on the previous forum software there was a script, but I doubt many used it - the "shout" feature in my previous post was there automatically - in fact, I only noticed it yesterday!
If used at all, it need to be there from point of load.
There are few people on this forum these days as it is; my thoughts, if used properly, might keep members longer rather than losing them, as seems to happen. The other day, there were only about 11 on the forum, and I think I was the only member logged in...

Re: Modding Portal?
But creating a thread ensures that more people have more time to see it. Posting a question through a chat box seems like even more of a gamble to me that someone who knows the answer will see it at that particular moment and will be motivated to answer. Don't get me wrong, I'm not dead-set against the idea, I just have a different opinion.bacteria wrote:but it could be used differently to the usual pointless drivel in chat by using it for fast answers to problems which can be resolved easily, rather than just posting a topic in a thread and gambling that someone who knows the answer reads the thread in the right forum section. Anyway, if Ben does bring the wiki back to life it would be fun to make our own pages on it detailing our projects, along with including a one-stop shop for tutorials. I was frustrated and sad that the wiki died in the past.

One thing for sure, we need to get more people here on this forum, and staying too. It would be very sad indeed if this forum died. There are few portablizers still active on this site.
