internet tablets

wow. another thread from me.

i currently own an ipod touch, but its gonna die soon. it doesnt hold a charge for more than 6 hours(wifi off) the home button is broken, the bezel is cracked, and the side of the circuit board is actually cracked.

i am going to replace it, but with what? i want something similar, although i would prefer a linux operating system. i dont want another ipod touch. the nokia n810 is the one im eyeing, but i wanted to see what people have to say about it, and if there are any similar devices.

specs i want:

-portable.
-touchscreen*
-wifi
-bluetooth*
-lowish price <$500*

What size of screen do you want? I assume 4" or so, if its to replace a touch. Or do you want something more like a tablet pc? What would be main uses be?
$500 should be plenty for almost anything of this type.

A tablet PC or netbook will give you a better browsing experience than those small internet tablets or MIDs. They're between $250 and $400.

The HP netbooks apparently have the best keyboards, a plus if you want to use it for games or word processing as well.

Because an Atom and GMA 950 can run games. Yeah... no.

Not NEW PC games, but older PC games and emulators work fine. (If my old 500 mhz P3 / S3 ViRGE based Toshiba can run Half-Life, Unreal Tournament, and epsxe no problem, so can a computer with 5x its performance. ) If you want better games on a netbook, you can get the Asus N10. It has the 1.8 ghz Atom and a GeForce 9300m, and it can apparently run Dead Space, Crysis Warhead, Bioshock, and other games no problem.

If you wanted it for new games, the Nvidia ION handheld concept I threw together a while back would be perfect. (Man I wish some company would freakin' make one already. )

Raon Digital Everun note! its about twice your allowed budget but a UMPC/Netbook that weighs under 2 pounds, can fit in most pants pockets (mine anyway) gets ~2 hours battery life (or better with the extended one or an external) AND can play most new PC games like halflife 2, portal, halo 1, san andreas etc for 800$ its pretty freaking killer. specs are

*AMD turion 64 x2 1.2ghz (downclocks to ~800mhz with cool 'n quiet enabled, 1ghz with it off)
*ATI radeon x1300 graphics card!
*1 gig of ram
*60gb HDD (for the cheapest model, if you want an SSD buy an mtron one, its faster than the ssd equiped one comes with)
*built in wifi/bluetooth, the bluetooth works GREAT in my experience, ive never had a problem connecting any phones to it for tethered modem use (moto q, htc touch and some moto slider)
7" 1024x600 touchscreen lcd, daylight visible and indoor visible even with 0% backlight!
*weighs 1.6lbs
*keyboard is 85% of full size, its only a little smaller than an eee 900 keyboard, its cramped but useable. also has an optical trackpoint mouse which is AWESOME
*2 usb ports, built in SD card slot and USIM slot (no hsdpa modem built in, you can install one tho) vga output up to some crazy resolution, i use mine at 1680x1050 all the time

the only real downside to it is the lackluster battery life, if i run minimal backlight i can maybe get almost 3 hours of use out of it, on full bright with wifi and bluetooth turned on its closer to 2 hours. prices start at 800$ for the D60h (same one that i have) with no OS installed, you can get them cheaper on ebay if you look tho, i paid 650 shipped for mine but it has a few minor issues

If you weren't bothered by the typing on the ipod touch then just go with the n800, same specs just no thumb keypad thing ( not sure what the exact name for that is ).

The n800 isn't bad I use mine daily if you get one I will tell you some cool apps and help a bit.

BAWWWWW it takes getting used to, my hands are bigger than yours and i could type on it fine! its only ~10% smaller than an eee 900 keyboard BTW even tho the laptop is 60% smaller by volume AND 60% better performance

Wanna buy my N810? Right now, it is running Ubuntu, but I can flash it to Maemo (Stock OS) or Android if you want.

If you can wait a while, and do not mind working a lot with Linux to get things working right, and 3rd party apps installed, you could hold out for the english SmartQ 5 MID. No real reviews yet, I plan on getting one, though.

Interested in selling/trading that touch? Sounds like a perfect candidate for a mod I have been wanting to do.

I am not getting referrals or anything, I just happen to love that company, and happen to be online buddies with one of the reps.

Right now, though, the OS is really slow... They have not used any hardware acceleration, so I expected that, but a new update could take a while. And no Flash support is a bummer.

The N810 is nice, I just have so many gadgets, that the convergence it provides, I do not need.

If Triton's everun note intrigues you, but you don't like the price/battery life, you might like the Fujitsu U810. Not as beastly as the everun, but it'll get the job done. There is a video of it playing WoW on youtube. It'll even run Vista decently!
5.6" 1024x600 touchscreen (the dpi is actually less than the n810, so it shouldn't be too bad)
800MHz Intel A110 cpu
1GB RAM
40GB HDD
4-5 hour battery life
And the best part is the price, they go for $400 or less on ebay. The keyboard is a bit small, but I read one review that said you can thumb-type on it without much trouble. I plan on getting one when I finally get a job.

The tumor of a battery is the 4 cell, the 2 cell is flush with the back, but I don't think they were released in the US.
