Sorry to hijack but I was kinda wondering something. Are those skullcandy things any better than other buds? I live alone so the only time I use phones is when Im at the gym or under my safety gear at work. Buds are all I can fit under my mask but are those skullcandy things really that much better than a pair of VR3?

Those ATs are 38ohms, though, and I know that iPods/portables tend to do the best with 60ohms or so. Any amps you have experience with? I have some generic one that I use to hook up to my iPod lineout and my GB prosound mods, but do not have much experience with anything else.

I usually assumed that using a headphone amp via the headphone jack on an MP3 player would just degrade quality.

But even with the $200 I spent, It made it the cheapest thing in my DJ Setup.

Hmm... One thing I might try in the meanwhile is transplanting the drivers from either my PX 100s, or my Koss portapros, into the shell of my Koss UR29s. They are decent, but sound muddy and have "bass booster". They do, however, block sond out pretty well.

Yet another vote here for the Sennheiser HD280s. I got them from newegg for about $75 2 years ago, but it doesn't look like they carry 'em anymore.

Many people recommend running them with a headphone amp for maximum awesomeness, but I don't have one yet. I use them with my iPod and they also sound fantastic plugged into my mixer.

I've got a pair of Pioneer SE-305 headphones....and those things kick! Of course, they're of late 70's vintage....so that might not be what you're looking for...

DUDE! i hae a pare of SE-505s! ive still got the leather case for them too! those things kick so much ass, i need to take em apart and clean the pots and stuff tho but i love them, they weight a ton plus they LOOK SOO DAMN COOL

Sealed headphones have very finely tuned acoustics for their specific drivers. Open headphones have none whatsoever. If the driver is even the smallest bit different, which it will be, and is not in precisely the right place, which it won't be, it won't sound very good, I don't think.

This is true.
That is why I only use specific headphones for DJ-ing and others for listening to iPods.
