First SNESp.
I've been browsing the forums for a little while now. I was google imaging snes mini (didn't even know it existed until a couple months ago) and I found out about portablizing. It just looked so interesting and fun, I decided to make one. So I've been buying parts and following Ben's guide on extreme tech and just recently bought his book which helps a lot. This is my first time working with circuit boards and stuff, and I definitely want to learn more about it.
Anyway, here's my first snesp so far. I followed Ben's guide for his CNC SNESp.

The wires are all tangled and stuff, but I don't care about that right now, I just wanted to make sure the thing worked. I got it working yesterday and I was so excited. The sound didn't work, but I wasn't concerned about that. I was just glad I didn't screw up the snes or tv. I got the sound working today though. First I had wires hooked up to the mono audio place where the snes av jack was, but that didn't work. I tried redoing a bunch of my connections, but it still didn't work. So then I tried the left and right audio pins and was successful. Anyone know why the mono audio source didn't work?
Now that it's working, I going to rebuild the controller, do the standard reconnecting of the ev-680, and find a good case. I'm not going to worry about relocating the cart slot, I'll do that on my next snesp. Any suggestions for a case? I'm liking the ZN-40, but I think that's too big for this project.

Life of Brian, a well known awesome portablizer, used the ZN-40 case for his first 3 snes portables. They work just fine.Loc wrote:I've been browsing the forums for a little while now. ZN-40 is a pretty good case. Im currently modding it for my project. and looking pretty good there. And here is some words of adivse... AA's suck but if you have to use them. i though i would use them too but now im waiting for $$ so i can buy some Li-Poly. it just a hassle to recharge AA's constantly.

I tested the battery life twice today and both times the system shut off around 27 minutes. Is this normal? I didn't think it'd be that short. So I tried connecting the TV's +5 volts to the snes's, but I couldn't get it to work. Is there something I'm doing wrong, or should I just go for better batteries?

Batteries drop in voltage as they drain, and the system will shut off if it isn't getting enough power - you need to plan for this by using a battery or batteries with more than the minimum voltage required.Loc wrote:I tested the battery life twice today and both times the system shut off around 27 minutes. Ok, I connected the TV's +5 volts to the SNES and got it working. I tested the battery life twice again and got 21.5 minutes of power. Wow, I didn't know AAs sucked this much. So I've been thinking of getting these batteries to use instead. I know Brian used 2 for his SNESp, but he said 1 would work fine too. Does anyone know how long 1 would power the system?

Hmm, are you sure you're not confusing two different portables? That's a 3.7v battery you linked to, so you'll need two in series to get a much more useful 7.4v. My second SNESp (with the black ZN-40 case) used two 7.4v Sony Li-ion camcorder batteries wired in parallel, which was only done to increase play time. Now, if you wanted to get real fancy, you technically could run your system off of just one 3.4v battery if you used some sort of voltage booster to get up to the necessary 5v for the SNES and whatever voltage your screen needs. Check out Texas Instrument's website for one if you're interested. I'm actually planning to build a super slim and small SNESp in a few months and I think I might use that technique to save space.

Yeah, you're right. I was thinking of this post and got confused, but you were talking about the infolithium batteries. I would probably use something like TI's PTN04050C, although for a beginner that might be making things overly complicated. If space is the top concern, then it would be worth it. The easiest thing to do would be to just use two cells in series for 7.4v and then step it down to whatever you need using a PSOne screen's onboard 7805 linear regulator, an external one, or a switching regulator.
Actually looking at the spec sheet for the PTN04050C it appears to be just shy of 90% efficient, which is better than using a linear regulator.64M320N3 wrote:Ya, but the problem with that is that it decreases your mAh.

I believe it will. The battery is rated at 5.6A, and the protection circuit prevents anything over 5A so you should be perfectly fine. How much does an SNES + screen draw, anyway? Surely not more than 2A. I tried testing the current draw once before, but my digital multimeter is a little dinky one and can't be used for anything over 500mA or something like that.
