You need a VGA TV tuner box, because separating the signals in Composite and getting the sync signals to a frequency that won't blow the monitor up isn't simple.

Remember, you're still going to get all the video artifacts Composite creates, like dot crawl and color bleed. S-video is much better, and digital is even better than that.

I believe only the Linux kit allowed you to use VGA officially, and you have to have a sync-on-green capable monitor (uncommon).

so would RCA->s-video->VGA work better bic? Any adaptors for that?

If you start with a crap source (composite/yellow phono connector), then you'll get crap output at the end. To get all of the information for an image down that single composite connection you effectively have to 'throw away' a lot of the signal information; you're merging colour, brightness and timing info all through that one wire - once you've got rid of information like that there's no way of getting it back.

You really should start with an svideo signal at the minimum (and preferably component or RGB) if you want to use a high resolution display like a monitor or LCD tv.

Get a component to VGA converter box off dealextreme, mine was like $40, and it works great.
