If anybody has an old thin slot loading CD or DVD drive that they don't need anymore, and would like to donate it it me for research into hacking it into a GC disk-drive (FULL, detailed, pictured process will be documented for everyone to follow if successful). I'd buy one on ebay, but I literally have no money to spare for it. (gotta pay rent in a few days)
It'd be awesome if anybody had one, if not, no worries!
Anybody want to donate a slim slot loading disk drive?

I've got one from an old Powerbook G4 that's a combo CD burner/DVD reader, it's some sort of IDE mini format. I'll take pictures tomorrow if you're interested. Let me know!

That sounds perfect! What I'm planning on doing is taking the laser assembly, motors, controller-board, etc. and migrating it into the slot-drive.
Some pictures would be awesome!

You're one post from 2000. :O
How are you going to decrease the laser assembly size? Isn't that the real problem?

Here's some pictures!

Top casing taken off:

And here's another tray loading drive that you could also have if you want, I can't imagine the shipping would be much different if I included it: http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a243/ ... G_2289.jpg

you DO realize that the laser assembly of the gamecube drive, the actual laser part, is like 1.25 inches thick right?

Yes, but I think I may have a workaround for that. When I start on it, I'll post the method to my madness in the progress thread. I'd like to keep it a secret for now.

Ha! My girlfriend just bought one exactly like that for her iBook G4. Too bad we couldn't have done some kind of rotation... I send the CDROM to khaag, you send me the combo. Aww well, I just won't tell her about thatsgtpepper wrote:I've got one from an old Powerbook G4 that's a combo CD burner/DVD reader, it's some sort of IDE mini format.
