I'm having some terrible problems with my nintendo sixety four portable. I know it's not the prettiest, but I've poured at least 50 hours of work into it and it still won't work. I soldered the AV and power plugs back onto the board, and tested it on my TV, but nothing happened, so I simply assumed that I relocated my cartslot wrong, so I buy all of the stuff to build another portable, and tonight I soldered it all together, and the EXACT FREAKING SAME THING HAPPENED!!! All that happens is the speakers squeal extremely loud and nothing happens on the screen, except sometimes the backlight flickers on and off. I know that the problem isn't the batteries, because the same thing happens when I use my power supply. I've tested multiple games, bought different batteries, used jumper or expansion pak, tested on TV and my psone screens, with the controller plugged into the first port or soldered on, the cartslot relocated or not. The symptoms seem to be a squeal out of the speakers and light flickering of the screen. And the last few times that I tested it the red LED just simply shut off after about 10 seconds, but the screen's speakers still squealed

Does all of the new stuff you bought include a new n64?
If so then the only explanation is you're doing something wrong.
I've got a mystery too. No resister will work on my 5 volt supply from my screen.
But when considering all the modding you do at once I suppose that it's pretty easy to miss a small step.

I have no idea how the same thing could happen on different boards twice.

Yep different boards, I'm going to try my 3rd board tonight and see if I just managed to copulate up 2 boards on accident, because I'm using harshboy's diagram.

oh the squeal is like WHYAYAYAYYAYAYAYAYAYYAYAYAYAYYAYASYAYYAYAYYAYAYAYY as loud as the psone speakers go.

as for your question, maybe you should try putting a 10 ohm resistor infront of each LED.

Give us some good pictures of your setup, particularly the power supply. Mayhap one of us can pinpoint somethin for ya.

Ok, I found out a few of my problems. I bought this from tibia, and a blue LED was replaced with the red one, and there was a small solder drop on the cpu, making it make that weird noise. Then the screen I was using didn't work and I was putting 6v in the 3.3v line, but my n64 still works amazingly *doh* now I'm combining both of my portables to simply make one that works But there's still one major problem. You'll have to watch the video I upload shortly.

Edit: I have the video made, but I can't find the FREAKING CORD!!! I'm still trying to get the video up.

Then the screen I was using didn't work and I was putting 6v in the 3.3v line, but my n64 still works amazingly *doh* now I'm combining both of my portables to simply make one that works But there's still one major problem. Ok, for those of you who have no audio and a small screen. I'm running my portable off of an adjustable power supply, set at 7.2 volts. I took this screen from my other portable, because that one won't work. In my video, the system clearly starts up with no problem. The blue LED comes on, starfox 64 clearly starts up. It runs for about 3-4 seconds and then goes berserk. The screen goes white and the speakers make a horrible sound. then I turn the power supply off, and the camera slips out of my hand, I over correct and jerk it too much and you can see me. I attempt to say, "Oo! That's me!" but all that happens is my voice cracks.

I wired my n64 exactly the way it's shown in Harshboy's diagram. The only thing I can think of is that the n64 is overheating that fast, which isn't very plausable.

The only thing I can think of is check over your board and see if a solder blob fell anywhere. Or try another game.

Actually there was a solder blob on the n64 But I removed that and the same thing happened. I figured out my problem though. My adjustable powersupply only puts out about .8-.9 Amps. It could only keep up with the n64 draw for about 5 seconds on average. Then the power would drop and the screen would go haywire. How did I figure this out? I spent hours on the phone with a nice friend and I hooked it up to a TV and it did the same thing. I hooked it up to a battery and it worked!! :DDDD My first portable still isn't working though, I'm gonna desolder this whole rig and see if I can get it to work

Ok, another double post I shorted out my battery by accident. Did I ruin it? It won't power anything The plus sat on the minus and a tiny little bit of smoke came out. Then it wouldn't power my n64 or screen. Nothing. And my gamecube joystick only works in 3 directions. right, left and down. When you press up, it goes northeast instead. Anybody know what's wrong?

I never understood the mechanics of frying a battery. It's just two different materials! How can it go wrong?!
