Re: PS2 Price Cut
Wow, if you pay more than about $50 for a NES you've been ripped off... unless it's in hyper-good condition.
Re: PS2 Price Cut
Well yes, I agree, the NES owns a Ps2, but its the same deal. And ask Nevermind, he sells his NES systems for a fairly big price the last time I checked.weaponepsilon wrote:Seconded...eurddrue wrote:NES is awesome.Oniak wrote:People spend 100+ on a NES, whats the difference.XCVG wrote:I just cannot justify spending $100 on a last-gen console.
Re: PS2 Price Cut
If you really believe that the NES is better than the PS2, you fail. Sure you can think the simplicity of 8 bit games are better than modern 3d gaming, but don't let nostalgia cloud your judgment. You sound like a fool.
Hardware is different than software, my friends, and the PS2 is capable of running anything the NES can, and more. I shouldn't have to say things this obvious, but people forget.

Re: PS2 Price Cut
Erm... shut your face.
NES was great for a lot more reasons than nostalgia.
1) It saved videogaming in North America.
2) D-pads!
3) The Mario, Zelda, and Metroid series, along with many others that still exist today.
4) Revolutionary games: Zelda I, the first game where the player can go anywhere he wants right off the bat, save for a few places, and can beat the game in any order he wishes. This changed RPGs. That's just one game.
What can the PS2 boast? Analog already existed, its graphics are inferior to the XBOX, it only has two controller ports, and only a few games were extremely good, most of which were carried over from PS1.

NES vs PS2 is a matter of opinion, not hard fact. Technology wise the PS2>NES, there's not much else you can compare without crossing the line between fact and opinion.
Re: PS2 Price Cut
Not disagreeing with you. The NES is PWNage. But the PS2 did bring a lot to the table. In the order you brought them up:Kurt_ wrote:What can the PS2 boast? Yes analog already existed. But not for button controls. The entire PS2 controller was analog - not just the sticks.
The XBOX did have better graphics. It also came out AFTER the PS2. By years. However, all I can say game wise for the original XBOX is Oddworld and Halo. Both of which took a while to come out (If memory serves).
EDIT: eagle5953 proved the red incorrect. Thanks, and sorry for the misunderstanding on my part.
Multi-tap. Though not widely used, it was a useful item for both PS1 and PS2 and allowed up to eight controller ports. 16 on the PS1 if you linked two of the consoles together.
This I agree with 100%. But carry-overs or not they were still brilliant games. Plus, don't forget that there were a ton of very unknown, and very underrated games. Some of the best games were unknown by general public.
I'm not arguing with you on your point. I'm just stating my opinion. And I didn't let my hatred of Microsoft breaking into the console market blind me to facts (And I'm not the only one. A good friend of mine, and 360 owner hates the fact that Microsoft entered the console market. But she loves her Halo edition 360).
True enough. But the NES DID save gaming in the US. Thats a fact, like it or not. And the d-pad did revolutionize gaming as we knew it.XCVG wrote:NES vs PS2 is a matter of opinion, not hard fact. My mistake, Kurt_. I thought I made myself clear. I'm not talking about time travel back to 1985 and take into account the gaming industry and the progression of the NES through history and what it meant in the hearts of young gamers everywhere.
I'm glad that Zelda changed things for future games, I'm glad the NES had a D-pad, I'm glad it has Mario, and Metroid too. I'm glad because I played those games when they came out and enjoyed them.
But I'm talking about 2009, NES vs. PS2.
My buddy has the ability to play every NES game on it, it has a D-pad, plays DVDs, and plays PS2 games, some online. I failing to see where the PS2 (the system itself) doesn't trump the NES (the system itself) besides nostalgia.
Next you'll want to say the abacus is better than a graphing calculator or that flint and steel is better than matches. How about a big stone wheel is better than a car?

I have to say, as a flywheel, that thing could power a car for quite some time once it got going.
As far as PS2 vs. NES in 2009, I still disagree.
An example to illustrate what I'm talking about:
In 1998 or so, the N64 released Ocarina of Time. To this day, it still comes out in the top five of best games of all time. It's an older system, yes, but nostalgia aside, regardless of how old, it still brings lots to the table. Just because it's older doesn't mean it's any bit inferior.

Ahem, may I say a word? I am 29, I remember the "good old days" of retro gaming (Atari and such). When the NES dropped everything changed. Most of you kids that grew up with the PS2 as their first system probably don't even remember the hype that surrounded it. NES was a religion, even news channels were trying to explain it. Ever since that bad boy came to America, everyone who was there will always compare the newer systems to it. Nothing like popping in Contra and suddenly your back in your old basement with your friends trying to tap in the konami code in time. Ahh...
Dont get me wrong, I like the PS2 and I own one. But the NES was a whole new epoch.
Its a lot like how any newer band will always be compared to the beatles for some reason.

Re: PS2 Price Cut
Exactly. I was rather little, but I remember some of it. I grew up with a hand-me-down NES as my first system (Probably when the SNES came out, since my older cousins gave it to us). That was probably around 1996 or so. But I still know the greatness that is NES, even if I was too little back then to realize everything it represented.
You see, there was this thing called the North American Video Game Crash of 1983. It destroyed the video game industry. The NES, in short, saved video games.
To quote wikipedia's NES page,

The NES was also marketed extremely well in North America. The over-sized cartridges are shaped like a tape, and inserted like one. Notice the name: Nintendo ENTERTAINMENT System. In a world where video games were shunned, Nintendo, through clever marketing and trickery, brought many people back into the video gaming world.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Entertainment_System wrote:As the best-selling gaming console of its time,[4]e[›] the NES helped revitalize the US video game industry following the video game crash of 1983,[5] and set the standard for subsequent consoles in everything from game designf[›] to controller layout.g[›] In addition, with the NES, Nintendo introduced a now-standard business model of software licensing for third-party developers.[6]

Thanks for proving my point about what I'm saying. Actually, thanks to weaponepsilon, there was one thing mentioned that the NES has that beats PS2. Cartridges. Not that cartridges don't have their disadvantages, but you have the ability to pop the game in and play it instantly with no load times. That is nice.Kurt_ wrote:Exactly.
