cant decide ^^ (procesors for laptop)

hey, I had for a long time a old laptop with a 478 cpu socket ,wich came with the following procesor.

INTEL CELERON 2.60 Ghz /128 Cache L2.

But Today, a work mate gave me a procesor with the legs curved.

after fix all legs I plugged the procesor into the laptop,it worked fine, and it ask following:

INTEL PENTIUM IV 2.40 Ghz / 512 kb Cache L2


I have now a big dilema.

I know P4 are better than Celeron, it have more L2 cache, and some other nice features on it.

about the celeron, this one it is faster than the p4 procesor (the p4 procesor is 2.40 Ghz, and the celeron is 2.60 Ghz) I also "heard" P4 processor gets more hot and needs more battery ussage than celerons.

But Ofc, I am in search of max posible performance at the laptop, I would like run some old games on it with the max fps posible. and get also performance on other non 3d apps.

wich processor should I choose? the 2.60 Ghz celeron? or the 2.40 Ghz P4?

Im testing both, but dont sure about results.

Celeron's are like Pentium IIs but worse. I'd go with the P4

Definitely the P4. You can see if the heat and power consumption turn out to be an issue (you can monitor temps with SpeedFan).

what about the speed?

I would like to overclock a little the cpu from 2.40 Ghz to get at least 2.60 or 2.80 Ghz, the mobo/bios is locked, so I cant do anything, at least using BIOS/software, but I found something interesting:

it seems about is posible overclock CPU by pin tweaks on cheap MOBOs, I find this really interesting, but also a bit dangerous. btw, Im really interested into get some extra speed

there was a software overclocking thing I found a while back (for windows) but I can't remember what it was called.

Even though they're clocked different, you might see marginally better performance with the Pentium 4 than with the Celeron, since they're both based on the same NetBurst architecture. They're basically the same, but the Celeron has much less processor cache (which really impacts performance). The extra 200 mhz may or may not make up for it.

They're both Northwood processors, so they're basically the same except for the clock speed and L2 cache.

The best way to judge performance, with all other parts bing the same, is to run a benchmark with both CPUs. Run something like 3DMark 03 or one of those Pi calculators. Make sure you use the same settings for both. Better numbers = better processor.

Personally I think you'll be better off with the P4.

yes, all of you are right, even having a lower Ghz speed, the 2.40 Ghz p4 seems working better at least at games, faster loading time, and no lags at the game startup, I also found the game sounds dont freeze as much as before and I can turn 1024x768 with full speed instead the last 800x600 I used before, seems it is getting nicer, btw I failed the overclock mod, event bridge the pins, I dont see any change at the CPU speed, using cpu-z it still asking 2.40 Ghz.

this mobo is as locked as hell, it have a OEM ACER BIOS (acer laptop/bios) wich dont let me change nothing, it just have basic features, Im thinking now about a bios mod.
I really hate , I cant take full control over my hardware.

tried both tools and dont work, the multiplier is locked on 18.0x and the FSB is locked too, I cant change the clock. I also spent most of the morning looking for mod my phoenix bios, I sucesfully dumped the bios to a file, then I downloaded phoenix bios editor and opened the bios file, the tool ask few errors when opening the file, and when it is loaded, it close after try to edit some values, I am using latest version I think.

mmm, if is not posible to edit the bios, maybe is posible enter into some "service" mode or some way to get posible "hidden" options at the BIOS.

I saw there are some key combinations at some bios, and also saw a "trick" for dell laptops by modifiing the ASET

I believe clockgen does control the FSB, assuming it supports your chipset.
