3rd party controller inside nintedo controller - need help

Post by stuntpenguin007 »

I've managed to fit a 3rd party controller into the casing of a nintendo brand controller, the d pad, the A, B, and c up, down, left, and right buttons are all functional and the start L,R and Z buttons will be soon too. Even though the Z button will be kind of tricky.

Now for the main reason I've been doing this mod is so I can have a thumbstick, like in the xbox, gamecube and ps2 controllers, inside of a nintendo brand controller but here's my problem.

the little mechanizm the turns when you move the joystick will move 90 degrees in either direction on the 3rd party controller, but on the usb controller I took the thumbstick out of it will only move 45 degrees in either direction. so in game play you only move half as fast.

If I followed the traces and found a resistor and replaced it with one of half the resistance do you think that would allow the 45 degree rotation to act as a 90 degree rotation?

will post pics later if I get this to work

YOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU jacked my idea :o

It's rather hard to get everything all packed up inside there, you have to hotglue the crap out of the joystick. here's a nice diagram made by the wise one himself:

oh, I didn't realize you were doing this, too. I bridged the pins and stuff already, but did you have to do something so the thumbstick would go forward all the way? pushing forward all the way for me is only like pushing it half way forwards on a real controller. also, is that a nintendo brand controller or a 3rd part controller inside of a nintendo brand controller like I'm working on, because I couldn't figure out how to get around the whole analog thumbstick and digital thumbstick thing.

If you've got a worklog I'd like to see it, in the meantime I'll search for your worklog if you've got one.

no worklog :( this controller is finished. But it is very simple to do. I used a third party controller mother board and put it into my official n64 one. then I just dremeled the joystick holes off of a gamecube controller. No, the joystick is pretty much the exact same as a n64 one. The c-stick joystick was pretty touchy though, took me quite a while to find the resistor values I wanted.

ok thanks, I'm not working with a gamecube thumbstick, but it's probably the same thing, Just not grey so It will look kind of funky. L and R buttons are now functional, so all thats left is to find the correct resistors for the thumbstick and get the Z and start buttons to work. I'm thinking a 28k resistor because a 56k is in there right now, and the new stick only moves about half as much, but all I have on hand is a 22k and a 33k so I'll try those out now.

well a 10k did it for the X axis but for some reason on the Y axis up is down and down is down too and when I'm not pressing anything, I move down, so I'm guessing a 10k isn't going to do it. I hope the resistor is my problem because I've already spent waaaaaay too much time on this.

You could alternatively use a joystick top, with a plastic circle underneath - as you move the joystick, it presses onto the 4 contact pad underneath, giving the effect of a digital 4 way joystick - would save all this hassle - just a circular plastic disc! :D

Yeah like a d-pad? I would rather have a thumbstick, but if all else fails I'll go with a dpad since it would be much easier. I tried alternating the thumbstick so I took off the x axis and made it the y axis but I still go the same problem with it going down. Today I'll try a differant thumbstick from a duke xbox controller.

Yes, like a d-pad, but instead of the cross pressing on the rubber pad, having a joystick pressing on the pad (flat circle underneath).

oh yeah that would be good, but I just cut out the hole that the joystick fits into, and that fits almost flush with the hole on the n64 controller. It's atomic purple so bondo might look really bad, but I'll figure something out.

also what kind of bondo do you guys use for building cases and doing stuff like this? I couldn't find any at Ace Hardware

I know this belongs in the super nintendo forum, but I put a retro duo controller pcb inside of a super nintendo controller after a little bit of cutting, because I was sick of all my controllers breaking and I figured the retro duo controllers would be more durable, but I didn't like how the buttons felt "sticky" so I put it in an official super nintendo controller and it feels normal, so hopefully it won't just stop working one day.
