N64 question?

Does a N64 game have a save battery? Or do I need to buy a controller pak or something?

Some games do; others require the 'controller pak' memory card.

There are several save types- SRAM, EEPROM, Flash and maybe some others. Only certain games have batteries. Very few games use the Controller Pak exclusively but many use it for optional or additional data.

There are two addons available, a rumble pack and a memory pack. Their functions are self explanatory. Many games, especially the later ones, have built in save-game as they have memory and a battery in the cartridge; however older games sometimes used passwords, or needed a memory pack.

In some games, like Doom 64, you need a memory pack to save games and rumble to feel vibration, so the game requires you to swap them over every now and again. There were some dual-packs that had both rumble and memory; selectable by a switch; handy for a portable, however only have 256mb memory for games instead of the usual 1mb. Not a problem if you just play a handful of such games at a time however. I used such a card on my Multi platform project; and will on my current N64 project too - you can then wire this combined unit inside your portable which is far better than an external port.

Wasn't the transfer pack just for copying stats etc from some Pokemon GC Color games to the N64? It isn't relevant for normal N64 game carts however.

yes, it was for transferring pokemon from origional gameboy pokemon games to the pokemon stadium games, just for storage.

Just for storage?! What about casting them against each other in an epic showdown to the death! (I mean, "faint".) Not to mention you can play all of the GBC pokemon games on the N64.

They were also used to play Mario Golf.
