Gamecube Laptop Project (Ver. 1.0)

Hello everyone, I've been around on the forums for a little bit and figured I'd finally post on here. I've been thinking about creating a Gamecube laptop and see how it turns out, but I'll need some help of course to work out details and such while I'm making this beast.

My main goal is to create a fully working Gamecube laptop that will run off a rechargeable battery, using a PSone LCD screen and of course the guts of the Gamecube.

Current List of things to be integrated:

1) A reset button (if it's even possible).
2) Try and make it as small as i can but still have plenty of space for the system to run cool.
3) Portablize it, make it so that it runs off rechargeable batteries.

(I'm still trying to decide where the CD/DVD drive is going to go due to not knowing exactly how much the mobo, power supply, CD/DVD Drive, and such is.)

You could just make a wii laptop, then you could play wii and gamecube.

Don't have to funds to get a wii (also don't really want to start off with a wii... Would prefer a gamecube.

mmmkay, but be warned, the disc drive is bigger than you ever thought immaginable. And it needs 3 different voltages.

... I'm planning on using the stock power supply, which I'm basically just going to disassemble the system, move what i need around and turn it into a laptop (runs off the power cord just like Ben's laptops) so i won't need to worry about the 3 voltages or at least shouldn't have to except for figuring out how to power the monitor.

You've got a LOT of soldering to do if you're planning on having a slim unit. As for a mechanized disc drive, that's going to be a lot of hard work, unless you chip your Cube so it can play backup discs. I know what I'm saying, I've played around with making a tray loading GC. If you're not going to chip it, you will have to use the original rotating motor and the original laser assembly. It's a lot of cutting and trimming to get a tray drive to fit around all of that and still work. It took a long time, and in the end, I scrapped that project entirely.

You're biting off a lot. If you have any hesitations about your soldering skills, I wouldn't recommend going through with this. There are easier projects to refine those skills with.

Didn't word that right, i didn't mean making the DVD drive a mechanized disc drive which the DVD tray pops out like a ps2/xbox/xbox360 i ment as in to make the door open like the original Gamecubes door.

I've changed some things in my first post to reflect the things I'm going to do now. Have a look and let me know what you think. Also thanks to you both so far for your input and help. I'm deciding to make the Gamecube fully portable (running off of rechargeable batteries).

Yeah that's what i was planning on doing. I'm going to be buying a PSone screen tomorrow along with the Gamecube I'll be using.

A psone screen won't make a good laptop screen.

Not to be rude or anything but, I'll use it even if it "Supposedly" won't make a good laptop screen If that's what i want to use then I'll use it.

Anyways any one have any suggestions where i should start first after i rip the system apart?

If your going to use a psone screen you might as well just make a portable not a laptop Or just put it on the back of the actual gamecube. and use an external controller

Sorry about that, didn't mean to sound like i was being rude or anything Eurddrue, anyways what would your suggestion be on doing my project? (due to this being my very first attempt at this sort of thing.)

He's just trying to say that on a GC laptop you might want something more than 5", maybe you should try a 7" screen.
The screen, according to your design, would kind of "float around", if you know what I mean.
Okay, let me rephrase that:
The bottom part of your laptop would be much larger than 5" in diagnal. A larger screen would be more appropriate to accomidate for this.

Plus, it's not like the power draw matters if it's always plugged into the wall. Might as well go big...

You can get a relatively cheap 7-9 inch screen from a portable DVD player. Just find one on eBay or something that doesn't want to read disks and has AV inputs.
