What is this Hip Gear Screen?

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

What is this Hip Gear Screen?

Post by riva16 »

I've NEVER heard of a Hip Gear Screen anywhere but here. Where is this thing,a nd what is it pulled from? Is it the LCD released for X Box? Or it it that universal LCD that fits X Box, and PS2? I'm confused! Is it cheap?

The Hip Gear screen is pulled from a Hip Gear Screen Pad, an odd gamepad (released in PS2, XBox, and Game Cube versions) that had a built-in 2.5" LCD screen for viewing the game you're playing instead of a TV. I think you can guess why this pad didn't do well. There's a fair number of them of on eBay being sold by a place in Canada.

They are well worth the money (around $36). But they are kind of difficult to hack. I'm working on hacking mine and I'm making a How-To as I go. Ladyada's info didn't seem to match up to my screen so I'm starting from scratch.
BTW, they have a separate board for audio, it's not built onto the video board like pocket TV's. Because of that, it has a really small LCD board just a little bit bigger than the screen itself.

I can get one for XBOX for $19.99, but Id on't own XBOX. Couldn't I just buy one and hack the LCD out of the controller? $20 is worth a small little LCD screen right? Whats the resolution like? Any good? Acceptable?

Yes you can hack it. The resolution is great, as good as any pocket TV you'll find.

Wow! I have a fan! :D Hey, if you have any questions for me just ask. How are you planning on mounting the LCD? Velcro?
I'm not currently making a How-To, but a lot of people have liked my design...maybe I should make a little How-To.... It would all be from memory so the wouldn't be very detailed.
