gameboy problem
my gbo powers on, but what ever game is in, it just shoes a stack of lines, like a row of them. there is very little battery contusion, but it may be the case. everything else works on my other gameboy. is this somting to be fixed, or headed strait to the trading area for parts?

Re: gameboy problem
I find that rubbing the ribbon cable with a hot soldering iron fixes all manner of GBO display issues. Keep a light touch and keep the tip moving so you don't burn through it. I use a 25W for doing this. Concentrate mostly on right where it connects to the screen, then work your way down.
Also spray some electrical contact cleaner in the cart slot and let it dry thoroughly. You may need to pry the pins out to make better contact.

she can't make it any clearer than that. If you can't figure out what she's telling you to do, then you are on your own.

Re: gameboy problem
I tried this (really, i did!) on all my GameBoys.
1. Take a cotton swab thing you shove in your ear.
2. Wet it slightly (dampen it).
3. Shove it into the system's cartridge slot thing. Move it around.
4. Do the same for the cartridge itself.
Works for me!

Re: gameboy problem
Everybody listen very well, for this is the last time. Game Boy video problems are NEVER a cartridge issue. This is not possible. The game runs a small checksum routine to ensure that the game is making perfect contact and will not even START without it. Stop telling people to clean cartridge connectors.

Re: gameboy problem
So if this is true, then why does a GBO with a cart in it turn on, show a wonky Nintendo logo, then freeze up? Because it can't read the cart, and needs to be cleaned. Duuuuuuuuuuur.Bibin wrote:an oversized block of misinformation

Re: gameboy problem
Because that's not a video problem. Unless you're stupid you can see the difference between a physical damage/error to the screen and something that is an video error but still is displayed on screen. (Ie glitchy graphics or a corrupted logo)Tibia wrote:So if this is true, then why does a GBO with a cart in it turn on, show a wonky Nintendo logo, then freeze up? Of course, yoshilimie's description wasn't very clear, so it's somewhat possible that "a stack of lines, like a row of them" means a corrupted logo, but I doubt it.
Not really no, but maybe he would've deserved to be, for getting onto Engadget with the help of Pallmer's mod.themadhacker wrote:oohhh bibin just got burned

Re: gameboy problem
May I introduce you to 99% of the "screen doesn't work, it's broken" Gameboys I've repaired over the years? People are that stupid. I guess I can't complain too much, though. They sell them to me for cheap, and I make $10 or $12 off each of them, from just a squirt of cleaner.nitro2k01 wrote: Unless you're stupid

Re: gameboy problem
Idiot, I'm saying that the reason you may have video problems is unrelated to the cartridge slot. That is not a video issue, that is a cart misreading.Tibia wrote:So if this is true, then why does a GBO with a cart in it turn on, show a wonky Nintendo logo, then freeze up? Maybe you should learn what the hell you're talking about. I started the mod, we worked in collaboration, and I did mention palmer in my submission to the terrible engadget, regardless of what they chose to put. On hackaday we both were credited properly.nitro2k01 wrote:Incorrect dickery

Re: gameboy problem
You really don't need to call me names. I'm not the one who thinks it's a video issue just because it does that. I'm the one who gets it with said "video issue", try it myself, and discover that it's just dirty. So cut the name calling.

If you're to lecture me on how I wish to respond, why did you insert "Duuuuuuuuur" at the end? You really needn't imply mental retardation.Tibia wrote:You really don't need to call me names. Must I go further into detail? The reason people suggest to clean the cartridge is because we are used to the NES days when the CHR (Graphics) and PRG (Programming) information were kept on distinct, seperate chips. This is why sometimes the PRG chips would come through fine and the game would run, but since the CHR chips were not being read properly, the graphics may not look correct if visible at all. That is why cleaning helps.
Basically every system after, GB included, has all the data on one ROM, and thus such glitches do not occur. The Game Boy runs a small checksum routine that reads the nintendo logo off of a cartridge to 1) verify proper contact and 2) ensure legality of the game. If the Game Boy bios recognizes it properly, it proceeds to run the game (You can get it to run with a messed up nintendo logo if you adjust the cartridge after turning it on however). If the graphics are not coming through properly, then the programming will not come through properly as they are not seperated as they once were. Couldn't be simpler. A wonky nintendo logo is not a graphical error, but rather a data read error displayed via graphics.
Honestly anyone must be a trilobite to not understand this as it can't be explain in any more detail that actually adds to the explanation.

Calm down, Bibin. Just remember that you're raging about the technical aspects of a Game Boy.
