Why does the n64 run on 7.4 v when it draws 3.3v (understand that) and 12v?

The n64 has 2 different lines needing power to run. A 12 volt and 3.3 volt, the 7.4 volts is ideal because it's a standard size battery and can power the screen without a regulator. The raw 7.4 volts is enough to power the 12 volt side of the console. While a regulator is built for the 3.3 volt side.
