I'm gonna throw an idea here for the payment to be made through paypal...
Why don't you, bacteria, send a request for payment through paypal to omgitsthebishop? You can specify the exact amount in the correct currency, and maybe even check the box "services" so that no shipping should be expected from you.
Then, if you send through registered mail with a shipping receipt and/or a tracking code, you SHOULD have nothing to worry about, as long as you ship to the address he specifies in the paypal payment...
I have been dealing with paypal since the early 2000 and I still haven't had a problem by simply following a few ground rules.
I'm just saying this since I know it can be time consuming to make a case from scratch, and you offer a nice kit for sale (I've thought about buying it myself, but I might just make my own for my own portable).
That said, I'm in no way responsible if he is indeed trying to scam you and manages to...

I don't say that lightly, and haven't said it about anyone else, but if you knew all the facts and had copies of his correspondence, as I have kept (mostly), you would agree. Alarm bells ring!

I did say he can send me cash and I will send out the item to him, as he was begging me to sell him a kit; yet, not surprisingly, he hasn't done so; as by sending me cash he can't scam. I said to him to insert the cash in an rubbish old (light) game cart, send it in a small jiffy bag and mark it as value of about $2 (certainly under $10) as "gift". That way I get it and don't have to pay any taxes on it (which would come out of the cash sent!). --no reply--

These kits cost me quite a lot of money to make and a lot of my time to make up; I cannot afford anyone to scam me and steal from me - in fact, if it happened, I would probably retract selling any more kits. I don't want to be put in that position, so not taking an unnecessary risk. He can pay me cash if he wants a kit as badly as he says he does, no problem...

I didn't mean to sound as if I wanted to force you into something you don't feel "right" doing, since I believe some people have a "sixth sense" for scammers!
I was just trying to give you an idea in case you hadn't thought about it.
That said, you are probably doing the right thing, when something smells fishy just leave it, even if it could be totally legit.
Anyhow, I think the idea for pre-made cases is great, and I'd hate for you to stop because of some "accident"!

this sounds like a good idea, but I dont really want to pay an extra 8 dollars to send 60 dollars, it doesn't make sense. I was talking to palmertech about a couple of ideas, and looked at the cases that people had suggested and they look good too.

The main reason to me, why your case was so appealing is because it came with a few small yet very crucial things, such as the little buttons and whatnot.

So thanks, but no thanks on that offer for sending the money, I'll find another case.




On a different note. New stuff came in the male today. Soldering iron, dremel tool, and the battery charger. Practiced some soldering on an old broken ps2 earlier. Went quite well. Plan on getting a case sometime this week, and making some real progress next weekend. Ill upload pics after my phone is done charging.

So Bishop has a bit of trouble with PayPal, so you call him a scammer and tell him you'll only sell to him if he pays you by illegally mailing you cash in an untraceable manner? There's no way he can mail you money in the US and be able to track it, so there's no way for him to know if you ever receive it. That's pretty scam-worthy behaviour right there. I'm not too sure the British government would like one of their own cops dealing in such a manner.




Bishop, you were right to not send him cash. In fact, if you were caught trying to do what he suggested, you could be fined or jailed. Pulling one over on customs is a serious offense, and they do watch for it. There's plenty of other ways to make an amazing case for your portable, and truthfully, many of them will require just as much work as Bacteria's cases. If you do like the vacuum formed look, there are literally hundreds of excellent tutorials available on the internet.

Tibia - He did not "have trouble with PayPal", he tried to underpay me, send in the wrong currency, when I sent his money back he demanded more money from me than he had sent; then sent me more funds in the wrong currency and wanted a rebate. If you knew the facts you would not say what you did. Anyway, old news.

Mailing cash is risky, even in your own country - I sometimes receive "opened" mail if someone at the postal system thinks it might be a birthday card or whatever and might contain money, that is why concealing it is sensible. As to your comments on Customs, that is for the value of the items enclosed - if sending a valueless item, the value is valueless; money sent enclosed is, if you think about it, the same as when you send a PayPal transaction abroad via e-bay or whatever; you don't pay tax on the money for the transaction, only the goods that you receive in return (so a valueless item is valueless). Sending money electronically is no different to hard cash if you think about it. You are therefore logically incorrect. I offered him the option for cash as that was the only option remaining. I have sent cash abroad in the past for items; what's the big deal?

I have no way to check items received abroad, only that they left the UK (which may or may not uphold a claim); it is trust - sending items when paid by PayPal is open to false PayPal disputes and is a concern - and take a long time to resolve.

Perhaps you regret being so brash, perhaps?

No, I'm not feeling brash. I am still feeling like you're trying to pull one over, and I think it's very smart of him to not send you the cash. Don't project onto me.

I'm not talking out my ass about Customs. I ship goods worldwide, I transfer cash worldwide. It doesn't matter if you're trying to hide money in a "valuless" item, if the amount is over a certain amount, there are customs fees and duties that are applicable on international cash mailings. There are plenty of other, safer, LEGAL ways to make an international payment: International money orders, international cashiers' checks, secure and insured wireless transfers. There is no reason whatsoever to be telling him to slip you the cash in the untraceable manner in which you propose, no matter what you think he tried to pull in PayPal. There are several international restrictions on mailing cash that are not present on wired funds transactions. This is because the money can't be traced, and an HONEST PERSON has nothing to hide by trying to covertly send cash in an illegal manner. Point is, the way you then asked for payment sounds like a scam. If you tried to do that to me, I wouldn't send the cash either. It's too suspicious for an "honest" transaction.

Whether you can check that the item was received or not is immaterial for my argument. He's quite right in not trusting your proposed payment method. If you don't feel he can be trusted for a PayPal payment, then don't sell to him. Again, no reason whatsoever to go through such suspicious lengths.

OK guys, I'm not going to agree or disagree with either of you on this subject. Tibia, I do not think he is a scammer just for the record, and also i'll be honest after looking back at what I did with bacteria, it does seem like I was a scammer (although I promise I'm not ) The main reason I am notsending him the money by mail is because it will cost me money to send money. whats the point in that?

Also Bacteria, I looked into the issue a bit because I was curious, I did not dig very far but I did read that you are not supposed to send money the way you told me to without specifying what it is. I am not saying I, or you would get jail time, maybe only a slap on the wrist, but it seems like your way is a little scary.

Finally, this is a thread about building my portable, not discussing who is wrong, who is lying and so on, so to get back on topic, I am recieving the PSone itself, screen and controller tomorrow. I really plan to get some "cutting" done on the case itself, and ordering a case online.
