9.6 v battery + usb cable + samsung p2 = dead p2. why?

ok. i was trying to rig up a battery powered charger for all my usb devices, so i did this:
-i took a 9.6 volt 1600 mah rc car battery, an old male connector for the battery, and an old usb cable.

-i soldered the power and ground from the usb cable (red is power, black is ground) to the male connector. (assuming black was ground and red was power)

-i isolated the wires, then plugged the charging cable for my samsung p2 into the apparatus, plugged it into my p2.

-my p2 literally exploded.


why did this explode my p2? (i checked on p2 wall chargers and the put out 9.6 volts at 600 mah)
could the extra mah be the problem? or is red ground on an rc car battery? :?: :?: :?:

9.6 volts == WAY TOO MUCH.

USB == 5 volts, at 500mah.
You just gave it 9.6 volts at 1600mah.

That's why.

i would agree, except the wall charger puts out 9.6v too, and that doesnt blow it up

The Wall Charger for this USB Powered device outputs 9.6v ?
Well I'd call that odd, but alright.

I'm going to guess you wired something wrong then, because I wouldn't expect the Ampere rating to cause that.

actually, its not all that uncommon. ipods, archos, cowon, and some of the irivers take 9.6v from their wall chargers. :)

Only under no load. Measure it when it charges, down to 5v.

Damn Chinese crazy power adapters. :lol:

Wow, fail. That has got to be one of the funniest posts of all time.

The USB spec is 5V. You just dumped 9.6+ volts into a USB device. Maybe you have learned a lesson here: use a 7805.

USB Outputs a maximum of 5V 1000mA, like has already been said. It ONLY outputs 5 volts, all the time. You put twice as much voltage as required or wanted. An expensive lesson indeed.

Oh.... Dear.... :shock:

Use a 7805 to kick down 9.6V to 5V which is good for USB devices.
