Why does Ben charge so much for portables?

example:
atari system: $25.00
hip screen pad: $30.00
nes controller (what i would use) : $3.00
battery holder: $6.00
on/off button: $3.00
easy/hard button: $3.00
and for the case use radio shack project box: $3.00
or use the system case cut it apart into a rectangle
it would be like $70.00

(making your own portable for less money priceless)

cause ben takes many man hours uses better parts then those and makes his own cases and has to rent an engraver

Yeah, he doesn't use hip-gear sheap stuff, I think he uses brand new portable TVs, ~100 dollars or more. And the use of a rented engraver is much more preferrable over a hacked up project box. Which would you buy? dinky project box sliced & diced beast, or an impressive, custom engraved beauty?

this is also on of his main sources of income. His target market is mostly collectors anyway, and they'll pay quite a bit for such a rare product

Not to mention that the equipment you mention, at the prices you describe, are cheap. Ben doesn't use those. He uses much higher quality, and more expensive materials. ie: instead of a Hip Screen, he uses a 3" Casio EV-680 Pocket TV. Now begone, ye of little faith.

He uses larger lcds than the hip screen pad which cost anywhere from $100-$200, also the cases cost a bit to cnc.

New screen - NEW NEW NEW, not used -- 100-200 dollars (jee think I just maxed out your alloted credit for this project.)

Need I say more? His items are collector's quality, obviously that means it costs more, a lot more.
