Well, I just got back from my local Circuit City. It's pitiful. I got a few pictures. Excuse the cameraphone pictures, but it's all I had on me.

They were advertising "All TVs 50% off!". More like "All TV 50% off", because all they had left was a floor model Samsung for $650. Even the $10 1980s TV with knobs from the employee break room disappeared since last time I went there. They had maybe a couple dozen CDs, one banged-up copy of Age of Conan, and 90% off guidebooks for games that came out 2 years ago. Basically no DVDs or video games, not even the hundreds of copies of The Dark Knight or Guitar Hero World Tour like everyone else says their CC has. There was a row of printers with missing parts, and a few floor model laptops, camcorders, and digital cameras left.


They had all the cables and video bus splitters they used for the HDTVs in big bins in the middle of the floor. $15 for "long" cables, $10 for "short" cables. In front they had all the splitter/amplifier boxes and power supplies. Too bad they weren't switches, or they'd be useful. (Adding a switch would probably have been easy, but they wanted $50 apiece for these things.) There was also a bin full of random A/V cables, coax cables, Ethernet cables, power adapters, remotes, and batteries. Didn't pay too much attention to it; we've got plenty of 'assorted electronics debris' bins at home.


The "$1 apiece" shelf had a bunch of random discs on it. Many were in-store demo discs from manufacturers (unfortunately no Circuit City ad discs), burned training discs, and a music CD they used for stereo demos. The Blu-Ray case for some random movie held Disc 2 for Mission Impossible 3, and the Blu-Ray demo disc case had another movie. Oddly enough, the random stack of burned discs also had Disc 2 from the Aladdin special edition DVD set. There were also some toner cartridges for an IBM printer on there, a yellow film cartridge for a dye-sub CD printer in a Ziplock bag, and other assorted nicknacks.


They're selling everything. Here's a carry basket full of half-used paper towel rolls. There were power strips like this everywhere; they look like the kind that come with aluminum mounting brackets for equipment racks. Too bad there were only 4 outlets on each, they wanted $5 apiece, and for some reason they had the twist-on outlet connectors that usually go on 220v appliances. They were also selling 4" wide pallet wrap ($5 a roll WTF?!), a box of assorted remote controls ($5 apiece), and CD-Rs from a broken spindle for a dime each.


I picked up an APC 350 UPS and a no-name ATX power supply tester for a total of $10. The UPS didn't turn on when I pushed the button without plugging it in, and a multimeter read 1.2v on it. But it does plug in and put 12v out on the charger leads, so if the battery isn't any good I'll figure something out. I think it was on one of the point-of-sale computers in the computer sales area. The battery's surprisingly small, and there's a lot of plastic in there that can be dremelled away to fit a bigger battery in. (Maybe a replacement Power Wheels battery or a motorcycle battery.)

The only thing they had left in abundance was those security tags (the ones the size of hockey pucks), and plastic security boxes they used to put computer parts in. They had a mountain of those things.

Probably won't go back this weekend when they finally shut the doors. The only stuff left is beat up, broken, used, or missing parts. Too bad they don't have any netbooks left, I'd grab one for $30 when they take 90% off everything.

EDIT: The charger works right (13v output), and the battery's up to 4v. It might work, it might not. We'll have to see.

The Circuit City nearby isn't thinking clearly, I think. I went in there last week to see if they had anything good, and they did: a Microsoft wireless keyboard/mouse set. It was an out-of-box model, but I liked it, so I decided to see how much it cost... I mean, it was probably fairly cheap, right, being an out-of-box model and all? But guess what? They wanted fifty bucks for it! That's fifty percent off of the MSRP of a brand new set; that's how much they were taking off almost all of their new stuff. I am not going to pay the same price as a brand new model for an out-of-box model that may have been handled by tons of other people and might not even work! What idiots... CompUSA pulled that kind of crap when they were closing, too. Forty dollars for a fake Xbox 360? That's an Xbox 360 shell, not a real unit they just bolted to a shelf. I'd have given them ten bucks at most.
