LED Mod. what's it worth?

sorry, i feel like a simpleton for asking this, but this is my first portable so go easy. but is it really worth it to LED mod the screen? about how much battery life do you save by doing this? are the any other advantages to doing it? disadvantages? other than the chance of some slightly uneven lighting.

also, are there any alternative mods to the LED mod?

i thought about it, but i'm really wanting to know what are the effects over the whole snesp when you do the mod. so i didn't really know if it should go here or there. lol. sorry though. and thanks.

There are two main advantages: 1) the power consumption drops by a lot and 2) the top of the screen's board can be chopped off which saves a lot of space. Those two reasons are usually enough for me, since I try to cram portables into ever-smaller cases with each project.

Just how much the power draw is has been posted on these forums several times. Anybody remember off the top of their heads what the draw is LED modded vs. unmodded?

Don't people find the LED's tend to burn out quickly? (and uneven lighting as the corners are brighter than the rest of the screen).

The top part of the PSone screen board can be easily retained and relocated if keeping the screen unmodded BTW.

I really think people's results are directly influenced by what quality/brightness LEDs they use and how well they can do the mod.

I don't think I have ever read about anybody's LEDs burning out on them, only people leaving dire warnings that the LEDs might burn out "quickly", meaning several years from now for most people. I for one spend more time making portables than playing them so I guess I haven't used my LED modded screens long enough to burn them out yet.

My first portable was LED modded. That was two years ago and its still hasn't burned out. I used a separate resistor for each LED.

I think the main problem is people are overdriving their LEDs. I had 30 ohm resistors on mine and two burnt out. Each LED had it's own resistor. I added a 50 ohm in series with the main power and haven't had any problems. The screen is plenty bright.

if i was going to LED mod the PSOne screen i would use the 0805 SMT leds that i have, more smaller leds = more even light ill post pics after i LED mod the 3" lcd i have

It seems that people who have problems with leds are those that overdrive them significantly by using an inappropriate current limiting resistor.
