PSX backups?

Post by 64M320N3 »

Hey, don't just sigh and move along, please help me!!
So, I've noticed my PSX games are getting really scratched up lately, and i kinda want to make backups before I have to lose them and go on a wild goose chase to find and buy them all over again.
So, i guess what i am really asking is how may i make backups that can run on my psx (that's right, not ps2) without a modchip. I don't plan on buying one of THOSE demons.
Is it possible?

What do you mean by that?
BTW i know swapping is possible, but i was intending to make these backups for the purpose of having playable discs, and if it requires the original disc once it is to scratched up then the whole trick is no good.

Get yourself some Meguiar's PlastX from an automotive store and go to town on the disc. It'll look much better. I used it to buff out the circle scratch of death on a free Gears of War disc I got.

You could also try a thing called: Brasso.

It can make a scratched cd look and perform like new. It fills in the scratches.

Basically what most people dont know is that.

A CD/DVD has a few layers of "protection", and then a layer of data. Basically, most scratches just damage those protection layers and then the disk refuses to be read.

To fix that, you can shave the protection layers off with a machine and then re-apply them on. (Thats what a resurfacing machine does. I do this like every day at my work.)

Yet, some scratches damage that data layer. If the data layer gets damaged, the game is toast.

One EASY way to check if the data layer got damaged, is to hold the disk up to any light. If you can see light through the disk, than your disk is toast. If you don't see light, then your in luck. In most cases, atleast.

That's okay, I got a skip dr. It works like a charm.

Also, you bumped from the dead. And that's okay, because at least you were trying to help me out. :D Thanks.
I've fixed my old Spyro game, Gran Turismo 2, and my Halo 2 disc that crapped out on me.
I already knew about the protection layers, though, I just forgot they could be fixed.
Also, it says that the skipdr doesn't work on bluray (not like i've scratched any of those... yet).
Why's that?

Oops. Sorry about the bumping. The forums said it was a new post.

Okay, basically it doesnt work on blu-ray because blu-rays have a different type of protection layer. (Newer technology permits newer protection methods.) I think its more resistant and made out of a different material. Most resurfacing machines don't work on blu-ray either. Although, this shouldn't a problem as blu-rays are harder to scratch than CDs and DVDs.

To achieve more capacity on a blu-ray disc, they put the data layer closer to the laser. They did this by eliminating the bottom layer. A traditional DVD is a data layer between two layers of polycarbonate. A CD is a data layer on top of one piece of polycarbonate (scratching the label wrecks the CD). Because they didn't want a bare data layer, they put a very thin, very tough protective coating on the bottom of blu-ray discs. It's hard to scratch, but you're screwed if it does get scratched.

Not necessarily, I saw a fixer specially designed for bluray discs.
Just wondering if it was a con, or something, because I really didn't see why you needed two separate machines for something that are in essense the same thing. I guess I was wrong, they are very different.
Also, I thought the 50 GB max capacity was because they use an awesome blue lazer with a much shorter wavelenth (higher frequency). I had no idea that the protection layer is actually thinner.

50GB is two layers. They use a blue laser too. It's a combination of things, really.

And by screwed I meant it's okay if the protection layer gets scratched, but it's really thin. So if you go through it (easier that with CD/DVD) your disc is garbage.

Um, what exactly do you mean by that? Because I can see light through every CD I own, provided the disc doesn't have a label that doesn't cover the whole top side of the disc. A lot of the time I can even read the label that way. They work 100% perfectly.

Try this: Take a coastered (useless due to a bad burn) CD-R and scratch the label. If you did it right you can see lines of light when you hold the disc up to the light. If this happens to a good disc, the disc is toast.

The laser "reads" data by reflection. The laser will go through that scratch and not reflect at all, registering a fault.

'PSX' is a DVD player that plays Playstation and Playstation 2 games.

Why don't people just use 'PS' or 'PS1' to refer to the original Playstation? It is seriously one of my pet peeves.
