n64 motherboard strip-down?

Post by Namehack »

hi, done some case modding in the past on various consoles but now I want to move on, so I was hit by a ide, mount a n64 in a 5,25" rack in my computer chassi, but the n64 motherboard is slightly wider then 5,25" so my question is, how much can you chop off the edges of the motherboard, and since the power and video output are in the way, anyway to remap power/output parts?

thats perfect! now, easiest way to cut it and could it be possible to run it on only one 4pin contact from the computer power supply?

Yes. You need to hook up the 12v line to the 12v out on the computer power supply, then use a TI regulator to bump the 12v line for the 3.3v line on the N64.

Just look up tutorials on hooking it up to batteries, and replace the batteries with the positive and negative points on the power supply cable.

The computer power supply already has 3.3v coming out of it somewhere... stop using TI regulators for everything. you guys are over-engineering.

Otherwise use a linear regulator. Its not a portable, there's no batteries, why do you need a $15 switching regulator?!

Because it's efficient? Don't UNDER engineer it!

Good point about switching vs linear. Still, I would not run my super sensitive N64 3.3v line off a computer power supply; Don't trust it.

I was mainly thinking of how I would do it myself, as I have many spare TI regs.

If anything, a computer PSU is MORE stable than a TI reg.

I think that linear regulators are a very good example of the WRONG way to do something.
It's like driving with the emergency brake on so you don't need to move your foot of the gas.

No way.

If I am wrong, someone smarter than me on this stuff please correct me; I always thought those TI regs were incredibly accurate, and the N64 needs EXACTLY 3.3v (give or take 0.1v) to run correctly.

It depends on the PSU. Some are great, others suck. I think the picoPSU is pretty good. It's usually the cheap power supplies that give bad voltages.

And think how sensitive a PC is to those voltages. Probably just as sensitive. That's why cheap PSUs cause crashes when overloaded.

and when to high, hard drive might not start up, or the whole computer might not even do anything.
