Jump Drives vs SD cards

I'm getting to the point where I'm running out of space on a jump drive I use a lot. I'm torn between buying a larger one, or just buying an SD card. I know not every computer has SD slots, but I already have a USB SD reader. Price isn't much of an issue. But what's more durable? Which one's least affected by shock, temperature, etc.? I usually just throw cards/drives in my pocket or in my laptop bag and go. As for data use, I've got hundreds of files on it that I often open to modify or print. Is either device better suited for that kind of read/write cycling?

I only use jump drives. sd cards seem too weak for my taste. (and my backpack )

SD cards are only really useful if you're transferring files to another device (camera, PDA, etc).

If you have a lot of files you want to haul around with you, I suggest a USB hard drive. Laptop ones are best because you can power them straight off the USB bus (no external power supply to haul around!)

I'll go against bicostp and not recommend a hard drive. They are more sensitive, (Not only to shocks, but also to pressure) bulkier, and probably bigger than you need. A 4-8 GB USB stick will do the job just fine.

I've been buying 16GB flash drives from newegg and reselling them at school lol

They're pretty much equal in all respects you listed, electronically the difference is whether the controller connected to flash chip(s) is USB or SD(HC). If you have the SD card in the little plastic holder it comes with, it might be able to take slightly more abuse than a plastic thumbdrive but that's about it.

I'm with the other posters, unless you have a device that needs a SD card, there's little reason to go with one over a flash drive.

Both have their place, but for your application thumb drive (what I call them) hands down.

I'm trying to avoid another USB hard drive, actually. I've already got several, and they don't fit in my pockets too well. They're also a royal PITA to ship across the country when jump drives/flash cards can go first-class for under $2.
