Gameboy mod idea

Post by zzaz3 »

I've allways loved the gameboy pocket desgin. It was the first gameboy I ever got and it's allways been my favorite.

I recently found my old gameboy pocket and thought, I wonder if I could manage to get a gameboy micro to work in the gameboy pocket housing. I tryed to find a picture of the Gameboy Micro guts online, but had no luck.

So, before I go out and buy a gameboy micro, I was wondering what your thoughts on this are. You think it's possible?

You can easily get the controls to work (simply by running wires to the right points on the contacts; it's the same method as extending controls), but you're still going to be stuck with the Micro's really tiny screen.

The GB Micro will not fit, period (I have tried). There is not enough slack in the LCD cable to rotate the mobo, and it is too wide otherwise. :(

As for GBA SP, yes! You may have seen my GBA SP in a gameboy original case, I recently tried the same with a Gameboy pocket. As long as you are able to rewire some parts on the sides of the GBA SP motherboard, it is completely doable. You can even use the normal GBP cart slot.

I have mine gutted, I would finish it if I had a spare screen lying around... I gutted all mine for LED frontlight panels.

From what I can tell it's a tight fit. Did your turn out anything like this?

My gameboy original one, or my gameboy pocket one?

The pocket one is not done yet, but not at all like that one. I am actually doing it right, rewiring the boards and such. :D

Mine uses the normal cart slot, which should be cool. In fact, with gameboy color games in it, it would look like a stock GBP almost, except for the screen cover.

Could you post pics of your GBA SP mobo? There are several revisions, one of them is perfect as the capacitors are near the center of the board, and do not need rewiring.

All I have is the gameboy pocket. I'm probably going to buy the Gameboy SP sometime this week.

I just checked ebay and they sell replacment boards for the SP. You think I should just buy the motherboard like that or take my chances and buy a SP?

Take a chance with yours. As long as you are careful, they are pretty much impossible to break. If it does, it is probably just a fuse problem. Easy fix.

Have you seen my backlit Gameboy Pocket thread? Look around,, it is on this page or page 2 somewhere. Might want to give that a go rather than wasting a perfectly god GBP. :D

Hmm, idk. Do I have to use a DS backlight or is there an alternative? I have 3 gameboy pockets, so if you know of any other cool mods like that one that'd be cool.

DS Lite backlight is what I used, and it is the best you can do.

That said, look for Bibin's backlit GBP thread, he has another method.

On second thought, I just had an awesome idea. I'll post pics when I'm done. Until then it's top secret

I bet I know what it is!

Just make sure the light will diffuse correctly, if you DIY it that way, you will need the sheet to be very thin to work correctly.
