Retro Duo SNES NTSC/PAL switch?

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

Retro Duo SNES NTSC/PAL switch?

Post by Life of Brian »

So, I've been doing some research and would like some input from anyone who knows more about this or has tested it themselves. Apparently the Retro Duo is capable of playing both NTSC and PAL games - does this mean that with both types of games the AV signal output is NTSC (for a US version of the Retro Duo) or do I have to put in a switch as shown here (click "English" to read) and switch my AV output for each type of game? Or am I totally misunderstanding everything?

Yes, it is, as long as it's a NTSC system. Even the NES, with the lockout chip disabled or the NES2 can play foreign games, but I think it scales them up or down to your framerate, resulting in a change of speed. I think the retro duo runs tehm at the original speed.

So, theoretically, I could connect the system to a PSOne/Zenith screen and simply put in either an NTSC or PAL game and have it work?

I'm fairly certain. You should probably wait for somebody else who owns one to answer this first, though.

That is my understanding too - interchangable game carts, no switch needed. PAL screen not as good as NTSC, so use an NTSC screen.

Here is a challenge - one game cart slot; for either SNES or NES. Can be done!

I thought the pin spacing was different.

Pin spacing is indeed slightly different. Chevy and I where working on a solution a while ago. I may restart the project f I ever get some free time.
