Yes a 7805 would be appropiate in this place. Some pics of the power supply would help. Though if you said you only need 12v and 5v, you can just hook it up like this:
It wont melt if you get one that can handle high draw and use a heatsink.

I have one other question. Does it matter what is used for a heatsink on the 7805? Can I use some sliced up aluminum? Would copper do better? How much "surface area" does the heatsink have to have to be effective? This may not be the best question to ask because individual experiences may differ, but what have you guys used to cool one?
Who else would I be?
