Cheapest Portable To Make?

Well i'm totally new to this and i'm wondering which console would be the cheapest to make into a portable.
I don't want to spend a lot and then mess something up, i'd rather start with something which isn't worth much and learn with that.

A list of things needed and their prices would be a great help. E.g Screen - $XX.

Probably N64, because you can get bare ones really cheap. NOAC is a possibility as well. It really depends on the deals you can get.

I'd rather do an N64 because i still have some old games which i'd like to play again.

I looked on ebay for nintendo consoles and they seem to be around the same prices as PSOne consoles which i noticed was explained in Ben's book.

Would you suggest me using the book to make a psone portable? Or would a nintendo still be easier/cheaper?

PSOne is disc based=harder. And the N64 is better documented.
