DVD player screens, a lot better than previosly thought

DVD player screens actually I think are the best choice a because
1. They are already are lit by LEDs. most have two LEDs and then lots of films and a plexiglass panel to diffuse them. So they pretty much already have a factory built LED mod.
2. If they have the AV inputs then it will work. This is very easy to check all you need to do is look at them.
3. They are the cheapest. Wait what portable dvd players are over 100 dollars or more! Not if you know where to look. I have bought two portable dvd players of craigslist for only 20 dollars each. Just post an ad saying WTB portable dvd player for 20 dollars.
4. A vast majority come with rechargeable battery packs.
5. The bonuses that come with them well obviously a dvd player which i hooked up so my dad could have one cus his broke but one also had an ipod dock on it so I modified that and made it in to a charger.
6. You can adjust the brightness and contrast (you likely wont need to previous owner did it) before you take it apart when you are testing your whole setup.
7. Also many have a very high resolution compared to some other screens i have seen, and a standard size is 7 in so you get a big screen for a handheld.

In summary they are led lit, easy to mod av jack, very inexpensive, you may save a lot of $ if it comes with a battery, you get a dvd player, adjustability, good resolution and big screen

Hint: When Buying of craigslist ask for the model # and then google it so you can get better specs on it. Or if they don't know it then ask if it has batteries built in and if it has av jacks.

Noobs. Have you even touched one?

Some DVD Players will work, yes, but are not the best choice.

1) They're usually 16:9 or 16:10, whereas games are 4:3, you either have a stretched game, or have an unused chunk of the screen. Most 7" players I've seen have a 400x200ish resolution.

2) They're mostly about half the resolution you'd want to see for a video game system. Reading text would be a nightmare (especially if stretched)

3) You need the circuit board for it to work. In some players this is integrated into the mainboard, adding unnecessary bulk.

4) The far-superior PSOne screen won't cost you over $70 if you buy it from an expensive source. And an LED mod is a piece of cake, albeit a factory LED mod does look better.

5) On what screen CAN'T you adjust the brightness and contrast?

They also suck because:

Extremely low res for the size

You need a huge video controller board most of the time

The inputs are often only composite, which brings us to the next point of:

They usually have terrible, terrible, terrible scaling from standard to widescreen

They are widescreen.

Almost none of the consoles people build here use 16:9, it is almost always 4:3. While they may be cheap, you should not use one for most portables.

And I am not being biased here, I have 5 PSone LCDs, 4 portable DVD player LCDs, a few in car LCDs, and a plethora of random assorted smaller screen. Believe me, most DVD players are not at all optimal for a portable.

Ive done it before and the ones i have one had very high resolution and another one which was identical to the resolution of the PSone screen (i have one), the ones I used had an entirely different smaller circuit board that was not integrated into the main board, the scaling was good on and i struggled to tell of any distortion. Maybe i had some really good one but yes they are not always the best i have had one that had terrible resolution and had the circuit board integrated.

Widescreen is never 320x240, you lose.

These things have a standard res, they just don't make better ones on a common basis.

If you DO have a better res model, please show us the model number, as I would be supremely interested, and the other forum members would love it as well.

The leather armor idea is indeed cool, if you ever make significant progress, you need to make a tutorial so we can protect ourselves from the zombies.

Im sorry i dont have the model number because i discarded the case and never owned the box and threw out all the internals, I will try to find the guy i bought it off of and see if he has the box or manual so i can get the model #. And I just had some really good results with them and get imidiatly attacked for it, cmon guys i was just trying to help with finding a new source for some inexpensive screens.

What is the model number on the LCD panel itself, or the video driver IC? From there, we can look up the real specs.

How new did the DVD player look? I've never heard of them being LED backlit, must be a relatively new thing. They'd be useful even if the LCDs were cracked. Could you post pictures of your screen?

Actually I really like DVD screens, I got mine for $35, and its 7 inch LED 16:9, and I don't mind.
