online store, legit? or phishing site?

Post by kasar »

I was browsing today for a good specs and nice laptop, and I found this.
http://www.special-lcd.com/index.php?gO ... oductname=
if this is true, I found the perfect laptop for me.

anyway there is some stuff makes me suspect about the site.

the design is a bit crappy, the site is slow, and I cant find any good reference of it, It seems doesnt exist, or people dont know about.

this basically means Im not fully sure.
Obiusly, I do not want to lose my money, but I also dont want to lose a good offer like this. the specs and price are crazy good, but like I said, Im not sure if this is true.

how can I determine if this site is a phising site or not?

help apreciated

Whenever you question a site's validity, there are two things you should look for.

The first thing to check out would be if they have a secure way to log into their site (put https in front of the address, or see if that pops up during entering personal information.) If that is not found, that's a good indication it's no good.

The other thing to check is their contact information. Their contact page says they are located in Hong Kong. However, their company contact address ends in @msn.cn. I would not be real eager buying from a company with a Microsoft Network email address, especially when it ends in a country code outside of whatever country they are located.

I would say this is a no.

I assembled one on dell.ca to see what it would cost.

I noticed a few things.

1) The only option for RAM is 4 GB. You can't choose less.

2) Likewise, you can't select a 200 GB HDD. The options are 320 GB (Default), and for more money, 500 GB RAID, 640 RAID, 250 RAID, and 256 GB SSD.
3) That site mentions nothing about the non-optional Physics Accelerators:

Adobe PhotoShop Elements [add $79 or $3/month1]
AGEIA™ PhysX™ Physics Accelerator [Included in Price]

4) Building as close to the specs as I could (some options weren't avaiable  ) It would cost $4,708 CAD, or 2964.22 EUR. I'm sure you can see that the price they're offering it for is clearly a huge loss on their end. Even if they get some fancy 80% off bulk discount or something, they're still losing 100 euros.

My conclusion: If you don't realize my conclusion by now, by all means, buy it.

"If it's too good to be true, it probably is."

http://whois.domaintools.com/special-lcd.com

Registered to some random 'company' in China, and the site has existed less than a month. The person who registered the domain has registered about 125 others as well.

Stay away. Far, far away.

What exactly are you trying to buy, anyway? (No way I'm clicking that link.)

It was a Dell XPS M1730 LAPTOP with SLI dual GeForce®8800M GTX laptop for about only 490€, I found that offer really unbeliable, so thats why I though It can be a phishing site, no one sells that gamming monster for only 626$ lol ^^

thanks very much guys

I don't think it's a phishing site. I think it's a scam site. You pay them money, they keep it, then close the site. After all, they still have 124 other sites to scam with.

Wait, is scamming a type of phishing? I'm pretty sure the term phishing is only used for identity theft situations.

Wait nevermind. Scamming is phishing.

Well, btw guys, I reported about the site and the email.

I hope the site will be closed soon, or at least the site will be flagged as a scaming site and users informed about.
