Cell Phone Antenna - Supposed to be grounded?

Well long story short I replaced my cell phone's external antenna, and it's not getting a signal anymore, but I can't find any problem with it.

I did notice the antenna is connected to the shielding and the cell phone's ground.

Does anyone know how antennae work? I have a feeling the two aren't supposed to be connected.

The signal should not be connected to ground if it's anything like a computer's wireless antenna.

No, it should not be connected to ground. I don't think so, anyway.

Well the answer is that... it is...

I dunno what the hell I did, but I got it working again, and am not going to touch it again. (I hooked but ends directly to the shielding. Who knew?

Dipoles for dummies... I dunno what kind of antenna you are dealing with but it discusses how ground comes into play.
