A year, not a month. I admit I pulled the $20 a year figure out of my lower digestive tract, but according to your source website the difference between running a computer and LCD display 14 hours a day vs 24 hours a day is less than $100, using the high estimate of 16 cents per kilowatt for Mass and Maine. (I think we actually pay somewhere between 9 and 12.) That still works out to less than 10 bucks a month, or a third of what you're estimating. Besides, I don't run my computer 24/7.

Also, are you talking about giving to an undeveloped nation, or to low income families here who expect free handouts?

why should it be our responsibility to feed house and take care of anybody but ourselves. in todays economic climate its hard enough to do that let alone be a philanthropist like you obviously are. i for one prefer to worry about keeping myself healthy and housed. i mean, yeah its too bad that 3rd world countries are poor and starving and whatever but WE HAVE ENOUGH PROBLEMS AT HOME to worry about. what about homeless people here, or the rising rate of unemployment in our country. or the families HERE that cant afford healthcare and can barely afford food every month. i dont give a crap about africa or whereever until our problems here are solved

It gets to a point that nations don't even want to try to better themselves like the other wealthy nations. They're just lazy and don't want to work.

The energy argument is way off from what you're saying now. You're starting to sound more like a donation infomercial. If education is what they need to get started in life, how about we send them resources? Much more effective than using less electricity if you ask me.

We watched a show in my government class that said giving away money is generally less productive than using that money to invest, start a business, create jobs, etc. Its like giving a man a fish vs teaching a man to fish. Could also be taken like being given something vs working all summer and saving for it, you appreciate stuff when you work for it. It seems heartless to not help them, but when you think about it, the "civilized world" was the same way a few hundred years ago, and I don't know of any aliens that helped us out.

Like I said before, with the saved energy/money/government military funds, we could easily establish an educational or health care system for them, and give them the knowledge and means to maintain them. It would be teaching them to fish, but over-fishing on your side of the pond with your fancy new fishfinder and prey-sonar-emitting lure isn't going to help the kid on the other side fishing with a stick and a bent nail.

And the difference between us and them is quite simple. They (most of they) live in an area where there are very little resources to be had. They need to import stuff. Just like America. Only America has (apparently pretend) money to buy stuff with from other nations.

I say give Africa some pretend money. They could use a few billion dollars in pretend money too. A deficit in the future is better than have nothing ever.

I couldn't care less how the economy is doing for everyone else, I'm economically smart, and I have no business worrying about someone else's cash. Hey I found an interesting statistic.
If we all stop using electricity in america we can save enough energy to power a country the size of america. Or we save enough money to use electricity next year. or we stop enough harmful things to the environment that its like running america for a year.

But I commuted to work with a friend today, so between the traffic to get to my house, the energy to call them and arrange it, the energy to power an extra weight of 150 pds in a car a day, over 1,000 years means I could have saved more energy by driving my car. Wait...
