Yes, Canada releases CO2 as well. Yes, they produce less. Yes, they have a lowerpopulation. Yes we produce roughly the same amount per resident. Can we stop the retarded flame war and just get on with the topic?

You know, if we make more efficient batteries...
That's because there's less people in Canada and less factories.

yes and im sure all you canadians only turn your computers on when your actively using them and shut them down the second your done too.
Oh and the Canadian Tar Sands! Don't forget that producing oil from those fields generates 2-3 times the amount of CO2 then from usual methods. Also it destroys hundreds of square miles of forests and wildlife habitat. Not to mention all the millions of gallons of waste water and pollution that is generated from extracting Oil from the Tar Sands.

All approved by the Canadian Government!

Not me.. I steal power and Wifi every ware I go.

And what ever about the oil. no ones listening, we will just run out of oil one day any way.

Or mad max! We'll all be driving V8s around Australia searching for more gasoline so we can drive our V8s and find more gasoline, robbing, raping, and murdering along the way!

I dont like this
Okay, you save 10-15% in many years. But you can still power A TENTH OF A BILLION HOMES right now if you just shut off your computers at night!Any excess power can be saved in the form of COAL PRODUCING POWER PLANTS. More efficient usage can lead to less dependence on non-renewable resources, and you can't deny that.
Im not meaning to flame etc. But they use the word billion instead of XMillion to make it seem worse
And coal producing power plants, not necessarily

And not all of them are. I have seen, computers that a solar cell/crank powered. They are good, last a long charge, and work well.
My point, they are making it seem bigger then it is. Yea there is a problem, but Id agree with them if they told the truth and didnt make it seem much more then it is. Its like having a single spaced paper. But you add in double space, add in a slightly bigger font, and margins a little bigger and now your paper is a page and a half.
Anyone notice how many(Not all) things like this are happening these days. It kinda pisses me off.
And America, yes lets mostly all of time blame it on america. The reason we have such big statistics, is because (Other then being the greatest country on earth, by my opinion)is we all can have computers, freedom to buy what we want, and the ability to easily get what we went. China, they cant that why their bigger but do less, as well as many others. So were not bad, were all of the same its just that our piece of land we live in does more, and so people hate us? Why?
Oh no you didnt
Once again, for all interested, I direct you to http://www.thestoryofstuff.com
Are you kidding me, the views on this stuff, the thing like the tank symbolizing america, or the big fat man running coperations who is gov't.
Its all one sided, holy cow I cant type what I want. But I could talk for hours having a Nice(Non yelling) debate with someone on this.

I have two power-sipping routers at the basement, a cable modem, a printer (usually on idle) and a server that idles all the time with the hard drives off.

Currently I have a PS3 running downloads and Folding@Home. I also leave my laptop at idle at all times (AMD chip throttles at 800MHz on idle from 1.8GHz) to receive instant messages.

I don't have equipment to measure the consumption. :?

This whole saving energy ideology is flawed. Sure, efficiency is good, but not as important as people make it out to be. People like Al Gore want you to feel guilty about using energy so they can make huge profits by exploiting millions of people while at the same time making the people they exploit feel good about themselves. That's all there is too it, there's nothing wrong with using electricity.

Agreed.

The problem lies in using TOO MUCH electricity. Like I said before. 5% of the world's population, 30% of its resources. It's doomed to fail, especially if you teach this behaviour is acceptable, and others around the world adopt this behaviour as well.

So we should feel guilty for being a wealthy nation?

Actually the point about "using more energy means more jobs" is appropriate. Someone was mentioning to me that Alliant Energy might raise its rates, for one reason being more factories closed and thus less electricity sold. Consumption=productivity=comsumption.

The government especially should be the LAST ones telling the American public to be less wasteful. Printing 1 trillion bucks out of thin air and using it for make work projects that should be state issues anyway is a lot more wasteful than leaving your computer on all day. And when you pay your electric bill each month I bet you don't have to borrow money from China to do it :)

While everyone has made good points (If not for just a general view of society on the situation), I still have to disagree.

Why? Because living in a consumption cycle is just not any way to live. Why consume more than our share when there's countries who could benefit from getting a good start, like central africa?

Instead of spending HALF of Amerca's tax money on the military, use a quarter to build schools, roads, and water sanitation plants in africa, and give the community the knowledge needed to maintain them and teach future generations.

It's your mindset on the subject that gets me more than anything else.

So just because we have money we should be obligated to give it? Sounds like communism to me. Free money != development. Look at trailer park America. People who live off of social security are bringing down society by leaching off of it. Whats so hard about getting off your ass and working for yourself for a change?

If I had it my way the government would be exactly how it was pre-WWII. The instant the US had a federal income tax this country went down the tube. Small government = Best government.

Who cares if we as a nation consume allot of natural resources? If anything we should be sucking the middle east DRY of oil. Take it all and leave.

Buy why should we give when we shall receive nothing from Africa in return? How about all the money the USA loaned to the Allied powers in WWII and NEVER received any of it back. All the money the USA poured into Korea and Vietnam. All the money the USA is currently pouring into the middle east. Yah I don't think the USA should be spending any money on Africa.

Pull out of Iraq asap. Let them bomb the crap out of themselves. Drill for oil in Alaska and say F-you world and go isolationist till we get our internal crap worked out.
