then you still need technicians to mantain the new transmission lines, and people to operate the new system etc. sure not as many jobs as when it was being built but to convert the entire country to a smart grid system would take the better part of a decade . the money saved from better efficiency and a more universal power infrastructure (plus new tech that could be introduced, like internet over powerlines) would more than make up for the expense in the long run, and a distributed power system is safer from attack than our current grid. remember that huge blackout that happened in the northeast part of the country a few years ago? that was because ONE power substation failed and caused a chain reaction of failures and knocked out power for like 20+% of the country

I said this in the other thread. The 1hr of computer=1 day of 60w lightbulb either uses a way awesome computer, or 60w equivalent florescent bulbs.

Now, one hour of a computer uses the same energy as one day of a 60W lightbulb.

Don't know where you heard that. A 60w lightbulb uses 1440wh a day, only an awesome desktop with 4 30" LCDs would draw that much in an hour. It could have meant an 8 hour day, which gives you a much more reasonable 480wh.

Most people are moving to laptops, anyway. The highest wattage power adapters for laptops I've seen are 90w, with the average laptop drawing 20-40w at idle/normal use with the screen on.

Global warming is a scam, the environment can fend for itself, nobody is going to save the earth because it doesn't need saving, use all the energy you need because it vastly improves the quality of life, Canada sucks, and the only big threats to the future is over population and expanding government.

I'll admit, I was wrongfully bashing americans.

But now it's your turn to admit that we can all save TRILLIONS of watts of energy with small and simple lifestyle changes, that some people (Marshall being a prime example) refuse for reasons that TOTALLY BLOW ASS CHUNKS.

As for laptops using less power: They sure do! But still, even the "energy star approved" ones use 1 watt of power when the adapter is plugged in to the wall, power or no power. Think 8 watts of draw for traditional ones. This goes for most adapters. If it's warm, you're burning energy for absolutely no gain, unless you have a cold house.

I'm sure if you added up all these simple changes that barely affect your life at all (Using CFL instead of Incandescent lighting, unplugging power adapters when the system is not in use / turning off the power bar, shutting off your computer at night and during school hours) we can save a combined QUADRILLIONS of watts of power. These changes won't take more than five minutes out of your INCREDIBLY busy day (I know, sometimes you just can't wait the two minutes of boot time, it's rough, it really is.), and will help better everyone in the end.

Then there's the changes that are a little more intense. Walking or Biking instead of driving, Replacing the windows in your house with inert-gas filled double panes, Buying quality appliances and consumer goods that don't need to be replaced as often (saving landfills the agony), and other things like that.
