But hey, you can at least run Linux on a PS3. I think that's pretty cool. Not that I'd ever bother to set it up, but still.
Oh, yeah, that beep noise is coming from the VMU. You'll need to replace the batteries inside it (two CR-2032 button-type batteries, like the Saturn uses), and the beeping will stop. (Or so I've heard; I've got two VMUs with dead batteries and I've never replaced them.) [/Poor attempt to get thread back in place]

Someone on AIM (vskid, maybe) gave me an idea I did yesterday: Make an AA pack that fits in the second memory card slot, and wire it to the VMU
EPIC long battery life.

Re: Beep sound? and other Q's
I think I saw someone do that with either AAs or AAAs... they put an LED backlight in the VMU, as well. It would also be great for the Saturn's clock/memory battery.
I've also considered replacing the rechargeable button/coin-type battery on the Dreamcast controller board in my Dreamcast with a AA battery holder and putting a few rechargeables in there. However, Batteries Plus had the battery I needed so I just replaced it. Might do that to a broken one I bought at a garage sale, though.

Re: Beep sound? and other Q's
I am skeptical of any backlight mod, I have checked it out, it looks near impossible.
The screen is soldered directly to the board, no real way to remove the reflective film.

Well, I suppose "backlight" isn't really the right term... To be honest, I don't even remember if it was done to the VMU or just to the controller, but either way, there was an LED providing light so you could see the screen in the dark. I'll see if I can dig it up again to show you.
EDIT: I can't find it. I think it might have been on DevCast, and that seems to be down.

I was able to cram a 5mm LED into a DC controller which shines onto a plugged in vmu.Twilight Wolf wrote:Well, I suppose "backlight" isn't really the right term... It works pretty well.

Maybe that's what I was thinking of.
That's pretty cool! Nice work.
