Not meaning to brag but... I got an record deal offer. :D

Post by HotDog-Cart »

Hey guys. I got offered a record deal by a small label company that is about 20 minutes away from me. (Yes, this is about my beatboxing.)

I'm pretty excited.

I'm going to negotiate terms with them in the next few days, so I'm happy.

Essentially, I'll be working with a few other artists and I'll get free recording time and a chance to tour and meet professionals. (Although, anything I record in the studio will be the property of the studios. As they will own rights to my music that is produced there. Although, I'll be working with a few other people, and I'll make sure to keep any material that I have thought of, away from them. I wont record any music there that I really think will be a "money maker". Due to I dont want them owning a few songs that I have made up. ;))

With that said. Is anyone else here or someone you know signed to a label?

Or is anyone else here in a band?

Good for you!

You should find a good attourney. With the help of a lawyer, you could secure a better deal for yourself--one that gives you money :)

Sure wish I was in a real band...all i have is my one man band that I randomly mix random stuff together (save the possum song for Possumus Woman, that wasn't random really).

Ah well, good luck to you in the world of media!

wikipedia wrote:A recording contract (commonly called a record deal) is a legal agreement between a record label and a recording artist (or group), where the artist makes a record (or series of records) for the label to sell and promote. Artists under contract are normally only allowed to record for that label exclusively; guest appearances on other artists' records will carry a notice "By courtesy of (the name of the label)", and that label may receive a percentage of sales.
That is the standard definition of a record deal.

This is what you got:
wikipedia wrote:A recording slavery agreement (Sometimes mistakenly called a record deal) is a legal agreement between a record label and a recording artist (or group), where the artist makes a record (or series of records) for the label to sell and promote for their own gain, with absolutely no monetary compensation. Artists under contract are only allowed to record for that label exclusively, with no chance for independent success; You may sometimes also go along on tours to help carry heavy gear, clean out vans, and other jobs nobody wants to do. They receive no pay, but they get to "meet professionals" as you take their heavy bags from them.
And MetallicaMan, him getting payed would require them to actually invest in him. I worked in the acting industry for a while, this kind of deal sucks in all kinds of clueless people, and leaves them burned. You have no negotiating power, as there are hundreds of victims to fill your place if you say no.

Unless you have had some success as an indie, or are incredibly talented beyond belief, these deals are just n00b-traps.

I just find it funny that he gave the topic a title that made it sound like he got big-break or something, not this little thing.
Regardless, I still think this is absolutely great for him! Edit: (So long as he enjoys it)

I am not so much bashing him as warning him. The huge difference between an Engineering internship and deals like this are that you cannot just quit. They have you locked to them for a few years, no way out, no prospects of getting a different job.

Plus, media is a completely different ballgame. For engineering, that experience will come in handy for getting a real job at some point. Most acting/music gigs go completely based on audition, not previous work experience, and with good reason: They do not hire people on previous "deals", because they know that the vast majority of them mean nothing. :(

Yep. Although I haven't been signed to a label, it's stressful work trying to get onto one. Recording takes a significant amount of focus and even more teamwork amongst the band. You really have to love what you do to make it in the music world.

You don't need a record company. All you need is one of these:

and one of these

From there you can either distribute over the internet, or buy some of these:

Guys, don't fricken bash me.

I don't even know the terms. I still have to speak with the producer.

I come here to talk about something pretty big in my life, and some of you just mock me. I dont appreciate this, seriously.

Also, from what I know (and this is true. Thanks to me personally talking to someone whos in the business and to my family lawyer.): When an artist first signs up for a multi album deal, they dont make cash. They only make royalties ONCE all the expenses are recouped. Only after they are recouped, can a artist make royalty cash. (And this is unfortunately, by law.)

Now, theres a small loophole. If I was to have a live presentation, I'd make most profit off of that, and the percentage that goes to the label is part of the recoup.

Also I forgot to mention.

This record label is an affiliate to: Sony/Amazon Records.

I am not bashing you so much as the practices of these places that prey on people LIKE you.

What does "affiliate" mean? I am a DealExtreme affiliate, and all it really means is that I get slightly more DX points when I order stuff. :?

Also, this is kinda blogging, especially considering how you have not even talked to the guy yet.

Who cares about "blogging"; this forum is supposed to be about "anything" and I do believe HDC's topic is classified as "anything". This is a rare occasion on my part, but I actually feel like defending the guy for once... The guy's excited, let's all just try to be happy for him and not be a total buzz-kill.

Like the old saying goes: "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."
