I'd nag at it more, but i don't really want to start a war here.

Re: Bacteria's project - portable PSone - IntoPlay
Ironically, it was emulators that got me buying consoles and console games in the first place.
In the mid-late 80's I would buy a game and pay £40 for it, usually the game came on a handful of floppy diskettes and ran on DOS; the game was rarely any good, so I would take it back and change it, a few times (ahem). I would get pissed that I spent decent money on a title to find out it was pants, so I changed it until I found a good one, then I kept it. It wasn't long until I got bored as there were few titles about and I could only play Dune II so many times! In a PC magazine article it posted about davesclassics which allowed you to download arcade games - revelation! Only so much fun on these, then an article feature in PC Format or PC Review or PC Zone (can't remember which) about UltraHue, playing N64 roms. Wow. Never played console games and always thought they were crap against PC games. Then I played Super Mario 64 on the emulator and that changed everything, especially when I also got into SNES games and roms.
Since then I have bought several consoles and games from shops, and far more from e-bay and car boot sales, and have a big collection now. I have no interest in roms, nor have done for a while now, however this initial interest spurred me to replace my rom collection with official original games and carts.
Emulators are not "the real deal" nor are capable of being; with some exceptions - eg Super Mario 64 was coded especially for the UltraHue emulator so played 100%, most of the other games ran with various degrees of issues and playablity - although modern hardware is unable to play UltraHue without major issues. I have a GP2s, although not played it for a while - to play its emulators you have to overclock the processor, you still don't get most games running fullspeed and no frameskip; some have broken sound or graphic flicking. I am sure this is also true on a PSP too. The only way to play games as they were designed to be played is by official hardware. Emulators are a poor substitute for the real thing.

Indeed, but that is the price for "free". Nothing is really free in this world, people.bacteria wrote:Emulators are a poor substitute for the real thing.
Since they are illegal, anyway, I'm not incredibly tempted to get any, especially now that you have to use torrents (the most incredibly crappy internet share tool ever).
If you want to play Zelda on the road why not make a nes portable?
At least people can be creative instead of being illegal

Re: Bacteria's project - portable PSone - IntoPlay
Very similar for me. I used to be all-pc, because in my opinion (at the time) all the modern consoles sucked. That was before I discovered used game stores, btw. Then I discovered emulators, which caused me to look harder for the classics.bacteria wrote:Ironically, it was emulators that got me buying consoles and console games in the first place.
A few weeks and $200 later I had myself an N64 and a few games, extra controller, expansion pack, etc.

I was actually referring to the forum as a whole. On average, I'd say we get at least 2-3 new ones a month.64M320N3 wrote:Mario wrote:I suppose it is true - People on this forum just crank out portables. They're nothing special anymore. We need to make something REALLY revolutionary! No offense, but ShockSlayer would probably be the greatest example of a person who cranks out portables.
Ya, get inspired and do something awesome, like the nintendo sixtyfree lite r
(ok sorry for using that as a benchmark, again...)
That was pretty revolutionary.

Yes, 2-3 a month is probably about right - not many given how many members there are here though!
BTW - my YouTube video has had over 17,500 hits, which I am very pleased about.
Only 600 viewings shorter than my last project got!

You don't have to use torrents, there are other ways if you know where to look. And torrents are an ingenious tool, much better than limewire as it allows you to download much larger files at a faster rate. And if you are a member of Demonoid, they're virus free. Much better than the virtual petri dish that is Limewire.64M320N3 wrote: especially now that you have to use torrents (the most incredibly crappy internet share tool ever).

Bac, absolutley love your latest portable. They're starting to look rather spiffing and curvy. Can't wait to see what you cook up next.

+1 for the ShockSLayer Crank joke.
Yep, I crank it. I'm a good cranker. Yep.

You're silly, SS.
On the topic of emulation, I like it for being able to try out games I'm interested in, provided it's Saturn or lower (I don't know how well my laptop could handle things like Dreamcast and up). I also like it for being able to enjoy games I otherwise wouldn't be able to play because they're too expensive to buy. I much prefer console gaming overall, though. Nothing beats the reliability and full compatibility of original hardware.

Yes, the only emulator I use and don't have the hardware for (apart from arcade games of course) is NeoGeo. Frankly, the games and hardware are stupidly expensive so I have to use emulator - Metal Slug series (although I have them on Xbox, which I haven't played yet) and Neo Turf Master - a fantastic golf game (only one I am interested in).
YouTube hits exceeded my previous project, which is neat as it only appeared on Engadget and not Gizmodo or Hack-a-Day this time. One guy on YouTube says he is going to buy my kit tomorrow, I have suggested he registers on the BenHeck site and starts his own thread (like Stephen0205 has), and joins us; up to him, but it would be nice to have another member here portablizing.

On topic: I thought you would have more views, my N64 DS mod had about 30,000 within a week, and I only got on DSfanboy.
I do not want to get into the emulator argument, but I agree with you. I never would have gotten a DS without trying the games via an emulator first.
Again, awesome job! (If a wee bit thick for my tastes.

Excellent

I just died inside. I really dislike pop culture. With a passion. Meh. I do love the fact that you went through and edited the song for me. *feels special* Now I have another fanboy. *takes out list* *can't find spot* *realizes he needs a bigger sticky note* *stops using asterisks to put motions into words*palmertech wrote:Crank that N64pSung to the lyrics of the cultural phenomenon, "Soulja Boy - Crank Dat"
Anyways, bacteria: if we(or any other forum member) could provide specifications for what we wanted in a vac formed case, do you think you could make it? Like, with measurements and stuff? I have a strange feeling I have asked this quesstion before, or someone else has maybe.

Re: Bacteria's project - portable PSone - IntoPlay
SS - can be done of course, but given the time, effort and expense for doing it, would be non-practical. It's one thing to make extra cases from a mold you made for your own systems, it is another to just make a mold in the hope it is viable.
How about you have a go at vacuum forming, ShockSlayer? Take your skills to the next level!
It is easy and quick to make a vacuum forming table, the plastic is quite easy to get hold of; it then comes down to making a mold well - that is the hard part - have a go!
