I agree with Kurt_ and Bic. I personally own a EEE 701A (first production run). Its nice but im looking for a beater laptop with a serial port. Probably get a old thinkpad.

My Eee pc is the best laptop I've ever bought, I can just chuck it my bag and it comes everywhere with me. I've got a full laptop but why carry round a big laptop when I can carry a small one with 8 hours battery life & a tiny charger, Best thing I bought for college the only problem is people always ask "

Seriously, I'm a Computer Engineering student and I use both of my Macs for software development, modeling and simulations, and countless other tasks. Could I do these things on a non-Apple computer? Of course. But I prefer the reliability and stability I've come to expect out of Apple's products and have rarely found elsewhere.

If you want to say, 'don't get a Macbook,' because it has integrated graphics, that's fine. Depending on what limpport plans to do with the laptop that might be a reason not to get one.

Also, limpport, don't buy anything now. Wait until June or July. By then you'll be able to get something better than what's out now for the same price or something with great specs today for cheaper then. Doing research is fine, just don't make a purchase yet, unless it's an amazing deal or something.

I second the Thinkpad T Series, Especially the T61.

I actually got my T61p for Free, built like a tank (I mean the things has Thick metal hinges), very powerful. Thing Plays Fallout 3 on Medium settings, and Emulates Gamecube at full speed on a T7700 Core 2 Duo (Using the Dolphin Emulator) and Nvidia Quadro FX570m.

Though the T61p cost $2k everywhere I look.

I've found three Vista machines on Newegg:
Acer Aspire AS6930-6560
MSI GX630-028US
SAMSUNG R610-64G

I like the amount of ports that the Acer has, but I've heard some not so great things about them. I've heard good things about MSI's though. And the Samsung looks pretty good too.

And what is the difference between the NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT and the GS?

Nothing like the old 16 pound Macintosh Portable from 1990, but still...

my lifebook has ATI rage mobility graphics card its actually pretty good for as old as the laptop is, i could run the original halflife and some other low end games on it, and n64 emulation wasnt too bad either!

At least get your facts straight. Mac OS X is based on UNIX, which, while similar to Linux, is not the same.

What does it matter that they're based on similar hardware? A good quality computer is not going to be cheap, just like the Thinkpad T61p that Jongamer was talking about. For $2000 you could buy a Macbook Pro if you wanted and have a computer that's of similar if not better quality. If you don't like Macs, no one is making you buy one. But don't make ignorant comments about something you don't seem to know much about; it just makes you look dumb. Rekarp, your arguments about the price and OS are a decade out of date. Macs' prices are in line with similarly equipped Wintel PCs.

Have tried it. I don't want a fisher price OS. (Vista also falls under the fisher price OS as well). I don't like my OS to be dumbed down for me. Unforturnatly the only reason I stand by XP is because all the software I use never works on Linux. Tried using Wine before and it got about half the programs working but they took a considerable speed hit.

And the fact that you are locked to certain hardware upgrades? I can't legally build my own Mac. What if you want an AMD cpu?

So I was a little off about the price big woop. All my other comments are still valid. I know quite a bit about computers and you are just looking for a cheap shot to take at a Mac hater. Sounds like you have been sucked in my the SMU syndrome.

Get a Win/Linux machine (hell buy a mac if you are so inclined and wipe OSx off haha). Much more compatible Hardware and Software wise.
