Yo! I've got a question that I would like put out there for anyone knowledgeable in hacks regarding DVD players. First let me start with No, i'm not here to ask for assistance with setting my DVD to a different region code. I'm here because I've noticed that a number of DVD players out there are starting to be equipped with USB interfaces and can read thumb drives and the like (IE removable storage). They can read a number of formats like DivX for one and AVIs as well, basically compressed video files that require special codecs to play. I have a Phillips DVD player equipped with these same features above, but one thing i noticed is they have set these things up to run on firmware, that can be updated via a CD or DVD, forget which it states in the manual. Seeing how its probably been a number of years that DVD players like that have been around, I figure some people may have started tinkering with them. My main question is, does anyone know of any hacks or tampered firmware that can be installed on such DVD players to make the supported file types be broadened?
File types such as .ogm or .mkv
I have yet to find an easy way to convert these files to a supported file type because typically the video files have 2 subs and 2 dubs and video converters typically only pick up the default sub and/or dub not always producing the result i want.

It's going to be a lot easier to find a tool with the functions you need than trying to fiddle with undocumented firmware.

Most of the time you can't find homebrew updates to the supported codecs, as the codecs are usually handled by a DSP, which hobbyists can't program easily. You might see if there has been official firmware updates that add support for more codecs, but it's unlikely that .mkv support has been added. Last I searched (a couple of months ago), only about 2 DVD players supported .mkv.
