GBC mod, help please.

Post by BlackAsNight »

I am about to start my first mod and was thinking of back lighting, pro-sounding, and overclocking my gameboy color. I started reading through some old threads and saw that you could make a gameboy pocket back light better by taking apart part of the lcd. I was wondering if this is the same in the color lcd, if so can someone explain how this is done. The help and any other tips for a first time moder (modder? both ways look weird) would be appreciated.

Backlight won't happen. The screen is incredibly strange in the way it works - it's not a traditional active matrix with two polarization layers and an AR film, but rather it has only one polarizaton layer, and is entirely opaque. When light is shone through it the image becomes entirely invisible, a strange phenomenon. You may frontlight, however.

Palmer and I pioneered the backlit Game Boy Pocket, and the screens are entirely different not only in model but in design and construction.

Oh, and it's modder, to clarify. :P

I am the guy who did that, so I guess I should reply. :P

You can front light a GBC very easily with a light panel from a GBA SP. Me and Bibin are working on a way to backlight it, but it is a longshot at best, and is probably below the skill level of most people. :(

EDIT: Read Bibins post, he has it about right. But I think you are wrong, it CAN be backlit. Splitting the glass panel is possible, just very, very hard. :P

Thanks for the speedy replies. Since I'm a new modder, could you tell me what a couple good start-up mods would be?

Prosound is a good one, and overclocking is good. Adding LEDs is fun, too. :P

Overclocking is terrible. It's not like overclocking a modern system where it boosts performance and reduces lag, but rather it just makes everything fast and annoying. Kinda like how running a tape faster doesn't make the quality better, it just makes everything too fast.

sometimes that's exactly what you want (I think the most common use of this is pokemon). I would suggest installing a switch so he could switch between overclocking and regular play.

Overclocking is bad? I DISAGREE! I have overclocked several gbcs, and nothing seems anoying about them.

Ok, so i'll start with over clocking and pro-sound. The game boy is just for playing pokemon. I never played the gold/silver/crystal set so i'm gonna play through it. I'll probably start next weekend, this weeks extra money is going towards my 21st bday monday. anything special i'll need besides a tri-wing screw driver?

Soldering iron, solder, wires, and a 8mhz or so crystal. :D

And get pokemon crystal, then you can put a blue LED in it like mine.

Doesn't a gameboy color already have a 8mhz? I like the led in the crystal idea. I will ask more about it if i get crystal.

You are right!

Get a 16mhz one, they work well. I used a 69mhz, it was cool, but never gets above double speed. :(

I will post a thread about my pokemon crystal.
